Target Limited Edition Towels, BIG SALES, Why Polo Ralph Lauren Free Shipping is Better

Hello-Hello!

We learned that Target is offering shoppers a very attractive collection of Limited Edition Beach Towels designed by contemporary artists. The artists featured include Raymond Pettibon; how gorgeous will this be when you and Mister Wonderful spread it out across the sand?

The towels are $50 and only available on line, not in stores.

These beauties are also available at Works on Whatever, a fundraising group attempting to raise art awareness.

In other Target news, we are terribly slow in talking about Target’s next collaborations, including the upcoming collection from swimwear designer Ashley Paige.  Yes, this is cable TV’s “Ashley Paige: Bikini or Bust,” of TLC reality show notoriety.

Above, two swimsuits currently for sale, the Deep Diver at $380 and on the right, the Gold Digger at $460. (Those two names for the swimsuits really belong in the “I Couldn’t Possibly Make This Stuff Up” category. Honestly.)

The retail marketplace is really heading into a frenzied unlike any we have previously , and as readers know, we are no spring chicken.  Here is a sampling of the offerings from our electronic in-bin; all are clickable to make it easier for you to get started on any last-minute shopping:

As predicted, J. Crew is continuing their markdowns, offering merchandise at up to 60% off. They are also providing complimentary shipping, regardless of the amount one spends, a new twist for the retailer.

J. Crew

Use promo code HURRY for the shipping promotion. And despite their disclaimer on the main website saying the “60% off is not applicable in J. Crew Factory Stores,” there is also a 60% off promotion in progress at their outlet stores.

One caveat: judging from the email we are receiving here at the Prepatorium the J. Crew website problems continue; this story in Women’s Wear Daily verifies the outages.

“On Cyber Monday, which fell on the first of the month this year, J. Crew was down for at least six hours and Bloomingdale’s was also out. J. Crew was back up Tuesday, but has had ongoing problems since, including some downtime Monday afternoon.”

Polo Ralph Lauren is also providing complimentary shipping on all orders, but here is the beauty of their offer:

“If you choose to ship Standard Ground and are shipping to multiple addresses, you will receive free shipping on all shipping destinations.”

And that is a beautiful thing for anyone how may be struggling to finish up their shopping, needing presents to go to different locations. Sadly, our affection for their aggressive shipping promotion is tainted by this:

Shocked by our initial sighting of the dreadful creation, overcome with sorrow for the poor pooch, we were even more horrified when reading the description:

“Reversible diamond-quilted vest with preppy heritage details…”

Preppy Heritage?” In a word? Not.  Heh-heh-heh. (If this is something you find appealing for Fifi, just click on the photo above and you are there.)

Tommy Hilfiger doesn’t seem to be doing the same with shipping, but at 40% Off Your Entire Order perhaps that lack is made up by deeper price cuts. When heading into the Women’s Department, in a cyber sort of way, one sees this incentive:

One sees the same signage at the Men’s Department. In fact, today’s Argyle Update is compliments of Tommy Hilfiger, the Men’s Tonal Argyle V Neck:

The Hilfiger Extra 40% off discount is scheduled to end December 22.

Banana Republic is also discounting heavily, even taking markdowns on gift items, like their fragrances (Rosewood Gift Set) as well as more standard fare. This gives us the chance for another Argyle Update! Whoo-hoo! The cashmere Argyle Sweater is now only $99!

The sweater is available in a number of colors.

Brooks Brothers is touting 40% off throughout the website, although some deeper discounting is also available.

Banana Republic Closing Monogram? Hilfiger & Ferragamo Black Friday Deals

Hello-Hello!

Well, if we don’t seem to be encountering another preppy money moment here. We just read that Banana Republic’s new upscale line, Monogram, is closing its doors on Bleecker Street. According to the folks at Racked, American Apparel is moving into the space.  Below, the Monogram store.

<br>

The line received a fair amount of splash when introduced; regulars may recall The Princess wrote about it upon its launch back in April.  The line was described as being more sophisticated, more tailored, and more expensive; 30-40% more expensive in some cases.

This may not be as cataclysmic as it appears however, as we do remember reading back in April the standalone store was only scheduled to be open for 9 months, which would sync up with the timetable mentioned in the Racked story.

We would be more than surprised if the line performed at anywhere near hoped-for levels. Many loyal Banana Republic customers felt the collection was overpriced, with the merchandise providing little or no justification for the higher cost. Nor was there enough distinction between the Monogram pieces and original Banana Republic fare to attract a new following.

Below, a BR Monogram knot halter gown that is definitely not for the faint of heart, at least not in the Chroma Pink colorway.

As our Tuesday post focused in large part on the J. Crew struggles, and now today we are talking about Banana Republic, it seems ideal that Austin’s American Statesman recently did an interesting story advising readers how they can achieve ‘a James Bond look’ at J. Crew and/or Banana Republic prices.  In the story writer Marques G. Harper suggests:

“If Savile Row isn’t in your budget, other spots worth a look for Bond-style wares are Banana Republic and J. Crew.”

“….the BR Monogram specialty line has classic items such as cardigans, patterned pants, dress shirts, trench coats and a tuxedo (it goes for $650 compared with a Tom Ford tux, which sells for $4,650). In other words, get your Bond look for less.”

A photo accompanies the story, featuring a Tom Ford tuxedo and other items at Needless Markup Neiman Marcus.

In our continuing effort to provide information that is moderately entertaining, yet also fiscally friendly, here are a few more tidbits on Black Friday sales and discounts, as originally mentioned in the WSJ blog:

  • Salvatore Ferragamo boutiques will begin holiday sales Dec. 4, marking down men’s and women’s clothing and accessories by 35% to 50%.
  • Tommy Hilfiger company stores will offer 40% off the entire store on Black Friday, plus they’ll take an additional 25% off purchases of $200 or more between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

One cautionary note: as TP was initially reading this she neglected to notice it only applies to Tommy Hilfiger factory stores, or outlet stores, whichever term you prefer.

The new Gap advertising campaign features a personality from one of TP’s favorite shows, Mad Men.  Actor Jon Hamm plays the show’s always-natty lead character Don Draper; he is joined in the commercial by his real-life significant other, actress Jennifer Westfeldt.

One more quick shopping tip, in this case directed at anyone who uses Clinique cosmetics: there is a Trina Turk-designed ‘gift with purchase‘ underway now at Nordstrom. The goodies shown below accompany any $25 Clinique purchase at Nordstrom, actually a fairly good arrangement IOHO, as the lines at the beauty counters can really be tedious when it is GWP time.  TP loves collecting these throughout the year (only as appropriate, when we genuinely require something from the line doing the giveaway, honestly!) and then donating them to a local shelter at the holidays.

Whether visiting the store in person, or in a virtual sense, don’t forget this is going on:

For today’s Pretty in Pink, this Leather Mini Wallet isn’t one you are likely to be lose inside the giant pile otherwise known as your purse! It is from one of TP’s favorites, Elaine Turner.

Don’t forget to enter the Great Giveaway, with $100+ in outstanding preppy gifts from Boatman Geller, the Preppy Princess, with the Summer at Tiffany book as a bonus gift! Just leave a comment telling us one friend you are grateful for and you are entered!

We hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weeknd!

Preppy News: Banana Republic Monogram Update

Banana Republic Monogram Blue White DressBanana Republic Monogram Silk Georgette Dress

Okay – be honest. If you didn’t know that Banana Republic is opening a new line of stores named “Monogram,” you would think that today’s blog headline implies, “Oh, BR is gonna’ be monogramming things. Cool.” Or at least The Princess did; perhaps TP is simply thick and slow to grasp the obvious.

That’s not to say we don’t find the BR Monogram Scroll Print dress lovely, as we do. The BR Monogram silk scoopneck dress is also something we wouldn’t mind having in our closet. And apparently the store itself doesn’t just carry higher end merchandise, but also uses a tonier environment to showcase said merchandise, right down to the Billy Baldwin furniture. But it seems not all are feeling the love for this brand expansion. We’ve seen & heard comments about the quality of the clothing, or lack thereof, with chatter about the clothing’s country of origin, China dominating the topic. Apparently shoppers believed the higher price and higher quality promises automatically translated into the country of origin being the USA, and that is most definitely not the case.

Oh, do make a note: apparently sales associates at Monogram would prefer being called ‘stylists.’ Spare me. This is when Great Aunt Molly’s absence is felt dearly, for at this point in the conversation she would lift her chin just a tad, arch one eyebrow, and say, “Really? They would?” in her classic Back Bay lockjaw. For the uninitiated, this was also the point at which anyone in the the room would internally shriek, “Dive! Dive! Dive!”. (As a rule, embarrassing moments generally followed the “Reallllllyyyy?” question when Great Aunt Molly was involved and the location was a public setting.) And to be fair to the aforementioned BR Mongram personnel, TP doubts they were the ones asking for a change in terminology. It’s clearly something created by the folks at the Mother Ship. BTW if any readers have been to Monogram, *do* share your thoughts with the rest of the class, yes?
