A Monday Melange (with Preppy Overtones)

Hello-Hello, and welcome to a Monday, we are ever-so-happy to be back home at the Prepatorium.

We begin with a note of gratitude, directed to all who helped keep The Consort out of trouble occupied while we were away. Honestly, the timing of events while out-of-town was reminiscent of our years in news, when employees would brace for spot news anytime we left town. It seemed that way for our latest escape, no sooner did we hop on a plane than we heard about a Lilly Pulitzer furniture collection launching, as well as Lilly’s home being for sale. (Many thanks to those kind enough to send along the URLs for the Lilly Pulitzer house listing the Consort wrote about here.) We hope to scare up a little more information on what will be a major furniture line later this week.

Back to standard fare, it is Fashion Week again, this time in Paris, considered by some to be the only place to show.  (Ahem.) A few personalities of note, the Nuclear Wintour Anna Wintour is seen attending the Chloé show, and on the right we have Liv Tyler and Justin Timberlake at Givenchy.

We will have more styles as the shows continue, particularly Dior and Chanel.  Below, several classic, androgynous pieces from Dušan Paunovic, a line we were not familiar with until this week.

Franck Mura/WWD

Also seen in Paris, these styles from Viktor and Rolf peaking the Outrageous-o-Meter in the red zone.

Giovanni Giannoni/WWD

Of course, each and every Fashion Week always brings its own brand of tragedy, to whit, more entrants in the When Pink Goes Bad sweepstakes.

Giovanni Giannoni/WWD

These are all styles from Pierre Cardin, but there were many other candidates.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There were a few lines line showing in Milan last week that we weren’t able to get to; Moschino‘s Spring 2011 Collection definitely had touches of nautical and preppy amid the red/white/blue palette.

Grosgrain ribbon was used to embellish shoes and repp tie silks were used on belts.

Below, bangles and other accessories backstage at Moschino.

Isabella De Maddalena/WWD

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another Milan show we haven’t yet covered, DSquared2.

Twin brothers (and business partners) Dean & Dan Caten offered styles with a preppish slant.

More photos from WWD’s Davide Maestri.

To say we covet the gray flannel suit would be an understatement.

From Women’s Wear Daily’s review:

“The tailoring was terrific, as usual, here done in more leisurely cuts. It all had a stylish prepster vibe, which, by night, turned heavy on the men’s wear references, seen in le smokings and silk dresses with dickey inserts.”

We adore the modified dinner jacket shown above left; here is more exquisite formalwear.

Knowing that at Milan Fashion Week simply everyone wears black, let’s play a round of “Spot the Prep” in this picture from the DSquared2 show.

Name That Prep

Yeppers, it is the one and only Kiel James Patrick on the scene; hoping for some outstanding styles at the Milan shows, we dispatched our team of crack CPFCs (Certified Princess Fashion Correspondents) to Milan. Kiel was joined by the immensely talented and lovely Sarah Vickers, also clad in bright and vivid colors, no monochromatic black for this preppy pair.

Almost Exclusive to The Princess

Here Kiel is seen getting the scoop from one of the models.

On Assignment!

Kiel even took a video at the show, click here to see that slice of fashion bliss.  (We have it on good authority that a certain young designer’s merchandise was the talk of the town in Milan, our hats are off to Kiel and Sarah, the product line is looking terrific.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an interesting SOTT (Sign of the Times) today: because Louis Vuitton is concerned about running out of merchandise, the company’s stores in Paris are closing an hour earlier.

Louis Vuitton

From the Financial Times:

“Along with Vuitton’s other standalone Paris stores, the shop is trying to sell fewer products and preserve stock for Christmas.”

Hmmmm.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And under our Sales & Savings heading, news that Neiman’s Last Call merchandise is now available online.

Last Call at Neiman Marcus

We haven’t done more than quickly skip through the online offerings, we hope to have a little more time to graze at the site later.  If you do pop in for a visit, do let us know what you think!

Today we shall leave you with a delightful Pretty in Pink pair from Tory Burch.

Tory Burch

October brings Breast Cancer Awareness month, 15% of proceeds from sales of the limited edition Rain Boots and Umbrella will go to the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation), up to a total donation of $20,000.

On that note, g’bye until next time!

Gap Sneak Peek & More on Those Lacoste Holiday Polos

Hello-Hello… and greetings from the Prepatorium on another busy day!

Despite the fact we have yet to put away all of our summer clothing, we begin with an early look at next Spring’s fashions from the Gap.

The retailer showed next year’s styles at a show in Tokyo yesterday. As is generally the case, some things looked darling….

Others not so much….

We keep thinking a lot of Liberty-style prints have been seen on this fall’s runways.

There will be a lot to choose from, in a variety of pastels and and other pretty colors.

Just so everyone knows that TP is clear on what season we’re in, we close out this section of the post with an Adventure in Argyle from Gap’s fall line, their Women’s V-neck Sweater, available in a number of colorways.

This one is available now, both online and in stores.

We have been meaning to ask if anyone purchased pieces in the Vera Bradley Canvas collection?

We remember seeing a good number of advertisements for the line, but haven’t seen any in stores. An online search generated a number of eBay links so we thought we would ask readers if they knew what became of the collection?

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Some readers may recall our July post talking about ‘when logos attack,’ featuring the upcoming Lacoste holiday collection; we have an update on the collaboration between the preppish retailer and Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana, who designed the polo shirts for this 4th Holiday Collector’s Series. (We wouldn’t be surprised to see work from the Campana brothers when Brazil hosts the Olympics in 2016.)

Prices will run from $165 to $7,000. The ‘special edition’ polo seen below showcases a ‘logo’ of eight crocodiles.

This shirt will retail for $165 and “only 20,000” have been manufactured, available November 1 at Lacoste online and the boutiques, as well as the Manhattan Barneys. The motif is based upon a chair the brothers previously designed.

Only 250 of this version have been created:

Contemplating this as a Christmas gift for Bitsy or Chip? You will need to tap the trust fund for $1,900 if purchasing the women’s model, or $2,900 if acquiring the men’s version.

You will also need to send your trusted assistant to the Moss store in either New York or Los Angeles to purchase one, the only place they will be available.

But do not forget the super-dooper-double-dipping-doppler-radar-version:

(Okay, that may have been a little over the top.) This is the ultra-limited-edition, only 24 have been created. The ‘fabric’ consists of hundreds of crocodile logos handstitched together, almost creating something akin to a Lacoste lace.

And as we wrote in July,

“If wondering about our Logophobia, we can only say “non, non, non, ce n’est pas un problème,” for these appear to be done with an artistic eye, yes… an outlook accompanied by a touch of whimsy.  They do not appear to take themselves too seriously. Very, very witty.”

Unfortunately they are also $5,000 or $7,000 depending upon the female or male version and clearly in the conspicuous consumption zone.

Today’s Pretty in Pink showcases the Prescriptives Pink Ribbon Palette for Cheeks and Eyes, our link is to Nordstrom, but it is available in many locations. Prescriptives will donate $20,000 to the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation).

We leave with a photo seen in today’s Times, perhaps recognizable to some readers as originally being featured on the popular Cake Wrecks blog.

The Times’ story looks at the popular blog and a new book coming out featuring 250 of the best wrecks. (That still looks like a lovely concoction compared to many of our baking endeavors!)

We’ll be back tomorrow!

Monday Musings: Liz at QVC, In the Pink

Hello-Hello, and Happy Day to all, especially those enjoying a day off, a little respite from their normal schedule!

We must begin by sending great good wishes, big smiles, hugs, prayers and lots of love to two of our favorite bloggers who started on a new path this weekend….

Moving on, big news for anyone who enjoys Liz Claiborne:

LCMUB539_372x456

The line is being moved exclusively to Penney’s. Both the men’s and women’s labels are making the move; if things are going well after five years, Penney’s can even buy the name.

John Aquino/WWD

Liz Claiborne New York, moves to QVC and the company’s outlet stores.  The WWD story on this notes something TP has wondered about for some time: the perils of watering down a designer’s caché by creating multiple labels sold in similar stores.  As the firm’s CEO, William L. McComb, put it:

“It was time to break the conflict inherent in the strategy that had a lower-priced offering of the Liz Claiborne brand at one department store in the mall [Penney’s] and a higher-priced version of it in a department store across the mall [Macy’s],”

This brings comparisons to American Living, the Polo Ralph Lauren brand sold at Penney’s. Below, a fashion look and a table lamp, both from that collection.

0900631b81777398M0900631b816edd81M

It’s unlikely there is much brand dilution with this line; most retailing insiders believe the line really bears little resemblance to standard PLR merchandise.

Other retailers have done well with designer collections specifically for their customers, such as the Simply Vera by Vera Wang and Dana Buchman lines  at Kohl’s, and Tommy Hilfiger is now sold only at Macy’s or Hilfiger stores.

From a big picture perspective this also allows the Claiborne company to focus more attention on several brands many readers are familiar with: Kate Spade, Lucky Brand Jeans, and Juicy Couture.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have a few more Pretty in Pink things to share, starting with an extra cute pair of Keds.

kicker_7_bcrfThe Keds Champion Pink Ribbon sneaker benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation – the company is donating 100% of proceeds to the BCRF.

Speaking of shoes, how about these Ragg Kids Puppy for infants and toddlers?

7954-203391-dOr these Bibi Kids Laceups, also for infants and toddlers?

1733-216725-d

If TP and the Consort had been blessed with human children we would be bankrupt; every single cent would be spent on shoes for the little ones, they are simply too cute!

Another delightful find, Kate Spade’s Bon Vivant Lilia, actually something of a bargain right now.

Because of the chilly temps outside, we have to share the Pink Funnelneck coat from Old Navy.

We leave with a look at the next generation Armani phone.

It does look sleek and elegant – dare we say understated?

However, we’re more than content with our iPhone tucked into its shocking pink case and we also have a greater understanding of just how easily one might become addicted to dependent upon the technology.

Until tomorrow,  we send smiles to each and every cherished readers!

All About the Pink & MAC in Lillyland Update

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

As mentioned in a previous post, October brings an increase in the volume of ‘pink products’ we all see, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Last year we remember the always-wonderful Adventures of a Southern Newlywed doing a post showing many of the ‘pink’ items available that supported varying breast cancer initiatives, and we’re borrowing her idea for today’s post! (Thank you Miss Preppy Newlywed.)

We begin with items we call cosmetics with a cause; below we show the Bobbi Brown Pink Ribbon collection.

bobbi-brown-pink-ribbon-large

This set introduces a new lip shade, Blush Pink, and includes a limited-edition lip balm, Pink Crystal Glitter.  The set sells for $40, and there are no shipping charges, there’s a nice surprise! The company will donate $35,000 from their North American sales to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Clinique offers the Great Lips, Great Cause collection of mini-lip glosses on a keychain.

Great Lips, Great Cause

The limited edition set also includes 2 charms: a Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Ribbon and a Clinique ‘C.’  (We’ll overlook any latent Logophobia symptoms in light of the greater good.) The set is a very reasonable $18, and $10 of that goes to the BCRF.  The company will also donate 25 percent of sales of its Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion to the BCRF.

Clinique and Bobbi Brown are both part of the Estee Lauder family; Evelyn Lauder founded the BCRF in 1992.

As part of our Friday Fun we offer a few Gossip Girl tidbits, first, the ongoing debate over this promo for the show.

Below, a sampling of Entertainment Weekly’s reaction to the ad.

“Freaked out yet? Confused at who you’re looking at? Concerned for the safety of any small children or ponies who may be nearby? Or does this inspire you to similarly tease your hair, slather on a terrifyingly dark shade of lipstick, and hang some door-knockers from your ears?”

Hhhmmm, some of the hair is a little frightening.  And our other tidbit, the cast is shooting in Chinatown this week. Below, actor Chace Crawford looks dapper on his way to the set.

We simply must share these next items for today’s Pretty in Pink, both from Louis Vuitton.

Nope, that was not a typo, Louis Vuitton is about to unleash debut a fine jewelry collection. Women’s Wear Daily (subscription req’d.) has more:

Spirit of Travel collection — consisting of six jewelry sets, each with a one-of-a-kind necklace retailing for up to $2.5 million — will then be unveiled to the public on Oct. 15 at Vuitton’s flagship on the Champs-Elysées.”

These are undoubtedly stunning when seen up close, they are amazing creations.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Previously we shared news (in this post) of the upcoming MAC cosmetics partnership with Lilly Pulitzer; their MAC in Lillyland collection is due out January 7. Now we have names for the actual items, and most invoke classic Lilly, like Joie-de-vivre and Optimistic Orange for two of the blush colors. Many readers will appreciate the Lipgelee names:

  • Lush & Bright
  • Shift to Pink
  • Resort Life
  • Preppy

(How about that fourth name?) Also, we do know one of the two nail colors is Steamy.

This color is not a Limited Edition, but part of the current MAC collection and available online.

May everyone enjoy a sensational weekend!

The Preppy Cardigan + Lacoste, Polo Ralph Lauren & Bobby Jones Go Pink

Weekend…? Did we hear someone say weekend?

Mike Segar/Reuters

Mike Segar/Reuters

Despite the oh-so-sunny weather (it is almost balmy!) in The Great Midwest, The Princess needs to remember Fall is here and that means sweater weather at some point in the future. The Los Angeles Times recently ran an outstanding article about cardigan sweaters although we were somewhat surprised the ‘preppy’ word cropped up several times in the story.

“The preppy classic can be worn buttoned up or dressed down, and this season, there’s a style that fits every budget.”

One of the sweaters shown in the article was this rugby stripe by Splendid; there would be no chance of a chill for TP because this looks ever-so- snuggly.

Rick Loomis / Los Angeles Times

The article also shows this cardigan by Cardigan. Really, that’s the brand name. The ‘full name’ is Cardigan New York and while it’s a relatively new label, the designer is a pro: Lynne Hiriak designed for Michael Kors and Derek Lam. Below, the Classic Cardigan by Cardigan in wool, nylon, and spandex.

.

We do know the brand was available at Lulu Brandt in Pasadena (stand clear everyone, Muffy Martini is probably on her way!) and you can definitely find Cardigan at Barneys and Nordstrom, along with eLuxury and Intermix online. Below, the nautical style stripe Elodie looks luscious, with a classic profile you will have for years.

In this photograph from the story, Bianca Palmerin wears Paul Smith and Andrew Miller is in a J. Crew sweater in another rugby stripe design. (Followed by shots of the sweaters at online retailers.)

Rick Loomis/LA Times

Rick Loomis/LA Times

The article also notes:

“For women, the cardigan is one half of the prim ‘n’ preppy twinset — a lightweight addition to any outfit and an easy way to add polish to any look.”

Are you feeling “prim” when you have on a cardigan? Do tell, we are simply dying to know.

Now it is time for a quick look at some fabulous fundraisers as part of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness movement.

Polo Ralph Lauren has loads of tee shirts and other goodies in their Pink Pony line of merchandise.  Ten percent of proceeds from these products go to the Pink Pony Fund. “With a focus on breast cancer, Pink Pony supports programs for early diagnosis, education, treatment and research.”

.

Bobby Jones has an outstanding pink pullover; 20% of the retail price goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

And the place to be Tuesday night?  Clearly, it was at the party thrown by Vogue and Lacoste celebrating the launch of the retailer’s Pink Croc Shop. The big do was at Lacoste’s Fifth Avenue store.

10% of proceeds from Pink Collection sales go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Several items from the line are available at Lacoste’s website, including this darling tote.

The next three days are stuffed full of functions, so we must fly and try to get organized! Do enjoy your weekend!
