Preppy Bits and Bytes

Hello-Hello and welcome to a bright and sunny springtime Tuesday!

We are brief in this post; today’s volunteer obligations combined with losing yesterday to a migraine make for an intense schedule, eek!

We begin with a follow-up to our post advancing the LL Bean Signature launch.

Courtesy LL Bean Signature

There are several stories available looking at the new line, including this one at Men’s Apparel Review.  For a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one aspect of the launch, click here for the Boston Globe’s story:

“.. an offer L.L. Bean — whose boxy, loose-fitting offerings sometimes turned off even the preppiest of teens — knew it couldn’t refuse.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Loads of outlets have stories looking at the sale of Tommy Hilfiger announced yesterday, including this one on MarketWatch. (We do disagree with their statement that the sale brings together “… two preppy icons — Izod, owned by Phillips-Van Heusen, and Tommy Hilfiger’s boarding-school chic…”, we don’t really consider Izod to be a preppy firm.) The MarketWatch story notes:

“By the end of the decade, the oversaturated brand wore out its welcome with consumers and fell off the fashion radar.”

Indeed.

For a bit of preppy heritage, T Magazine’s blog has a quick look at the new Lacoste book from Assouline.

Although we previously mentioned the book on our FB Fan Page, we neglected to include it here on the blog, oops. The book is now available and one that is on our reading list.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription required) has a story on accessories for this fall; once again, we are clearly going to be out of step. So to speak. On the left, a  style by Nicholas Kirkwood, the shoe on the right is from Bruno Frisoni.

.

We are probably better off with styles along these lines, seen in “The Preppy Collaborations Continue: Keds x Gap“.

The shoes seen above are from the collection Keds has done exclusively for the Gap, due out this summer.  On another fun note, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, but there is some serious pink at the Keds online shop!

The Champion Jute is for adults, while the Melody Hearts are for toddlers.

We leave you with another Pretty in Pink, something The Consort discovered over at Design Boom.

Rather like the more classic version, this one might work here at Princess InterGalactic HQ…

What do you think, do we need to one for the Employee Lounge? (Ahem.)

Until next time, we hope your skies are bright and sunny!

Brooks Brothers Online Outlet & “High Society”

Hello-Hello, welcome to a Wednesday.

In honor of the warming temps here at the Prepatorium we share a few looks from the Brooks Brothers spring/summer collection.

This seems to be the navy sleeveless wrap dress in the photo on the right.

Brooks Brothers

The images immediately below are all clickable if any of the styles are intriguing.

We do like most of the madras pieces shown for men.

The Black Fleece items are always… interesting. The spring styles seem much more wearable than Thom Browne’s previous collections.

Certain motifs work better on the ladies than they do on the gentlemen.

Indeed.

Perhaps of greater interest, word the retailer will be offering merchandise in a new format; more from a late February WWD story:

“eBay also is creating an online outlet mall for the U.S. with some well-known retail and apparel brands. Lord & Taylor’s outlet division is already on board and Brooks Brothers will be added next month.”

This one may hold promise for those seeking outlet mall price point without having to make a trip to said outlet. We’ll let you know when the site is live.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on today’s agenda: High Society. We are not talking about this version.

We refer to this incarnation.

Courtesy the CW

Debuting a week from tonight, the show is launching on the CW; the network’s blog describes the program:

“HIGH SOCIETY follows Tinsley Mortimer, New York’s most talked-about “Park Avenue Princess,” as she and her circle of often-controversial friends circulate through New York’s most prestigious black-tie affairs, outrageous parties and fashion exclusives, with never-before-seen access from behind the velvet rope.”

Or, as the New York Tix blog says:

““Jersey Shore,” look behind you. “The Real World,” step up the pace. “Dancing with the Stars,” watch your step. A new breed of reality show is coming to town, and it’s the New York bluebloods who will be in the spotlight. And no, it’s not “Gossip Girl”: This is the real deal.
Premiering March 10 on the CW, “High Society” looks at the infighting, cat-fighting and general, well, fighting, of a group of upper-crust society ladies.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with two more quick items. First, yet another in the ever-growing list of Gossip Girl magazine covers, this time Jessica Szohr showcases the April issue of Lucky.

Second, a sorta’-kinda’-maybe-not-really Pretty in Pink.  Meet the Christian Louboutin Barbie 2.0. (That’s our name for it.)

Net-a-Porter

The official title is Dolly Forever Barbie, we love the miniature shoes that come with the doll.

But the life-size version is much more fun.

Until next time!

In yesterday’s post we promised more on the special Barbie Show at Fashion Week; we begin with more on those in attendance, including, a number of the social set. Below, Muffie Potter Aston and daughters, Bracie and Ashleigh Tatiana.

Also in attendance? The one-and-only Fashion Herald; we almost emitted a most-unbecoming shriek when we read her Tweets about it!

Next, the little ones gather backstage.

For those unfamiliar with all the hoopla, in honor of Barbie’s 50th Anniversary this year, fifty designers created actual looks for the show. Below, Rachel Roy’s sketch…

Yesterday’s post really had a better shot of the special Christian Louboutins worn by every model walking the show; here is another look. (Not a terribly flattering shot, is it?!)

We retract a portion of the previous: not every model was wearing the Louboutin heels:

Those look like your basic Chuck Taylors to us, too cute! Now, we are guessing this next dress is the Diane von Furstenberg creation:

It looks like the basic wrap dress… yes? And below, we are also guessing on the designer. The style seems very Tory Burch to us.

Here is the Tommy Hilfiger sketch for his beaded white mini-dress, very “groovy,” don’t you think?!

And the real deal:

Brooks Brothers & the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval?

Hello-Hello and happy start to the new week!

Let us ponder the relationship between the Brooks Brothers cashmere cardigan….

Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers

and the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval?

Courtesy Good Housekeeping

Courtesy Good Housekeeping

But of course, silly Princess! We didn’t realize testing was done on cashmere sweaters by the folks at Good Housekeeping!  The Brooks Brothers sweater was described:

“…aced both the construction and fabric-weight tests…it’s one flaw: moderate pilling.”

Oops.  Testers appeared to favor the Ann Taylor V-Neck Cashmere Sweater:

220925_1788220925_5991

(Ummm… might we just interject that this Ann Taylor sweater is now running about $52?)

We get a teeny bit confused by the description of results for a few of the sweaters (Land’s End and LL Bean are included), not clear about the pilling on a few. Those categorized as Not-So-Good include Kohl’s Apt. 9 Cashmere Crewneck for Misses, a shame as their argyle sweater looked cute!

Also scoring poorly were two sweaters from Macy’s Charter Club.

We have chatted previously about all of the fun events surrounding Barbie’s 50th Anniversary, most recently last Saturday. We neglected to mention the very grown-up cosmetic collection Barbie is getting as part of her anniversary celebration! Mattel has partnered with Stila Cosmetics; below, some of the products in the Foxy Doll collection:

Courtesy Mattel via WWD

Courtesy Mattel via WWD

Mattel did a Barbie collaboration with MAC cosmetics in 2007.  According to the story in WWD, this collection will be a limited edition, available at select Sephora stores and Sephora.com.  Four different dolls will be featured, including Ponytail Barbie from 1959, Foxy Doll, the first African-American Barbie, Malibu Barbie and Jewel Doll.  (Of course, discussion of anything related to Barbie is quite difficult for TP, related to the childhood Barbie trauma that we explained in this post; do scroll to the bottom if you glance at it.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Frequent readers may recall a post back in September, Another ‘How to be Preppy Guide,” featuring insight from the wise folks writing the Style section over at Complex.  In a Friday story they point out the attributes of the classic pea coat:

“…. “so-called “pea coats” have become associated with preppy blueblood types, but their roots are much more rugged. The classic American style is actually based on Britain’s Royal Navy Jacket, which was designed to help sailors withstand the brutal conditions of the high seas without getting tangled in the mess of sails and ropes. Before long, the American Navy adopted it as its own.”

Complex also shares info about a great deal, Schott NYC’s Melton Wool pea coat:

Schott NYC Pea Coat

Schott NYC Pea Coat

This fabulous creation is available in several colors, including black, grey, and navy. Schott is family-owned; all of their products are made in the USA, and they are outstanding investments.  Obviously this is an upgrade from the Isaac Mizrahi pink pea coat at Target we shared just a few days ago.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close today with a fun “revision” to the back cover of The Preppy Handbook:

House of Cassette

House of Cassette

It is difficult to discern the text, but the photos probably tell you everything you need to know. The “new back cover” includes some choice writing:

“Consider the ascendance of Gossip Girl’s upper east side snot Chuck Bass…and the steady resurgence of populist-prep label J. Crew…”

There are also mentions of Kanye West, described as ‘the Fresh Prince of Nantucket’, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg, and preppy band Vampire Weekend.

We hope everyone enjoys a simply splendid week!

Do you think too many toys for girls are done in pink?  The U.K.’s Daily Mail had an interesting story on the topic, “Pink plague: Stores are accused of making girls’ toys just in pink to encourage pester power.” (The headline reminds us of the film Broadcast News and the line “When all else fails, alliterate.”)

At any rate, a case is made that pink is used in a discriminatory fashion from the time girls are wee little things, quoting Sue Palmer, a ‘literacy consultant and author of Toxic Childhood.’

“‘I’m worried about the “pink plague”,’ she said. ‘You can’t find girls past the age of three who aren’t obsessed with the colour.”

The story’s author, Sarah Harris, shares these thoughts as well as some photos illustrating her point :

“It soon becomes apparent during a visit to a Toys R Us store, that hundreds of girls’ toys come in just one shade: A lurid sickly pink.”

Brent Cross, The Mail on Sunday

We are standing by to hear your thoughts on the pink issue.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Talking about this reminds us about the increasing to-do over Barbie’s 50th Anniversary, including her runway show at Fashion Week in February.   Monday’s IHT (International Herald Tribune) has an excellent story about the designers Barbie has encountered over the years, accompanied by a fabulous slide show “Pretty in Plastic.”  TP is fond of the cateye glasses in the outfit below.

1959 Roman Holiday Barbie Doll (Courtesy Mattel)

1959 Roman Holiday Barbie Doll (Courtesy Mattel)

We are hopeful you won’t be aghast to learn TP has more than a few retro pieces in her walk-in.  The story talk about the many designers creating clothing for Barbie.

“From Benetton and Burberry to Versace and Vera Wang, Barbie has been dressed by more than 70 designers, including Giorgio Armani, Christian Lacroix and Monique Lhuillier.”

The story also carries a great three-shot:

Courtesy Mattel

The look on the far left is Armani, Burberry is seen in the center and on the right it is Benetton. The article and slide show really are fun, definitely worth a peek if you have a spare nanosecond to invest!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of investing, it will take more than a nanosecond to ingest/digest the latest book on the topic of wealth, “Rich Like Them“.  Released yesterday, the full title is “Rich Like Them: My Door-to-Door Search for the Secrets of Wealth in America’s Richest Neighborhoods,” written by Esquire editor Ryan D’Agostino.

Rich Like Them

Rich Like Them

An excerpt from the Publishers Weekly writeup:

D’Agostino took a more direct—and more entertaining—route: he picked the 20 wealthiest neighborhoods in America and went door to door, garnering interviews with 50 very wealthy, very different individuals.”

A quick couple of hits:

  • The W Editor’s Blog showcases two lengthy pieces from a former intern detailing her time working on the show in “I was a Gossip Girl Extra,” running yesterday and today. Part 3 will be posted tomorrow. (We had no idea this much could be written about a stint as an extra. No. Idea.)

Until next time!

J. Crew Website Update & A $30,000 ‘Thank You’ Ring for Michelle Obama?

Hello and Happy Tuesday!

It seems our post yesterday on the J. Crew website problems touched a nerve with many readers. The problems were also noted by the mainstream business and technical media. From Crain’s New York in their story:

“This is a terrible time to experience technical difficulties. J. Crew, which underwent a massive redesign of its Web site over the summer, has been suffering glitches ever since.”

There are also multiple reports of similar issues at several big name retailers, including Bloomingdale’s:

Bloomingdale's

Bloomingdale's

Bloomie’s does seem to be up and running just fine today. If considering doing some business in a cyber sort of way, don’t forget their free shipping offer for purchases more than $100. Use promo code SHIPXMAS at checkout.

Crew’s site also appears to be functioning at 100% this morning, providing another fiscally friendly shopping opportunity:

J. Crew

J. Crew

To receive the Extra 30% off sale merchandise, use promotion code EXTRA30 at checkout; this offer ends Wednesday night at midnight. And BTW, this promotional offer was planned all along by J. Crew, it was not created in response to the technical problems, as we wondered aloud yesterday.

TP remains hopeful everyone’s site remains healthy and happy for a robust holiday shopping season!

We have fun information to share regarding a little trinket Michelle Obama is hypothetically receiving as a “Thank You” gift from the President-elect, at least according to the Daily Mail on the far side of the pond.

article-1090653-02a59aa9000005dc-116_468x301

Courtesy Giovanni Bosco

The ring is to be created by Italian jewelry design house Giovanni Bosco, from the firm’s “Harmony” collection. (The items below are merely examples of the company’s work and do not represent their Harmony Collection.)

Giovanni Bosco

Courtesy Giovanni Bosco

Our struggle with this story is that we simply don’t see the President-elect doing business with a firm that will share this kind of information about personal merchandise in such a public fashion.  The Mail’s story quotes “A spokesman at Giovanni Bosco….” in their story as saying (among other things):

“‘Our American distributor has contacted us and has asked us to provide details on the Harmony ring.

‘It is our top of the range piece and made from rhodium and encrusted with diamonds.”

Courtesy Giovanni Bosco

Courtesy Giovanni Bosco

More quotes attributed to the ‘spokesman’ include:

‘Our agent in the United States was asked by Mr Barack Obama about the ring because he wants it as a thank you gift for his wife Michelle for her support the last two years.”

“We have a select number of clients both in the United States, Europe, Russia and the Middle East and our prices as a result reflect the wealth of our customers.”

The ring is supposedly valued at approximately $30,000 (USD) and it is to be delivered in time for the inauguration in January.

Somehow this is reminiscent of the stories circulating that an outstanding Atlanta designer, Cassandra Bromfield, was selected to design Mrs. Obama’s gown for the Inaugural balls.  Here is our original post on that topic, and then Ms. Bromfield setting things straight in this post.

Of course yours truly could be way off the mark on this one; we shall let you know of any developments.

For anyone simply unable to last another day without a “Confessions of a Shopaholic” update, Bluefly has posted the movie trailer and more.

Although the film doesn’t open until Feb. 13 next year, the Bluefly microsite has some fun features.

We see more and more references to the ‘preppy look’ or ‘preppy style’ the Jonas Brothers sport most of the time they appear publicly.

Charles Sykes/AP

PHOTO: Charles Sykes/AP

The three brothers were signing copies of their new book at the Barnes & Noble on Madison Avenue last Friday.  The book, entitled “Burning Up: On Tour with the Jonas Brothers is also available at Amazon.  Actually, it seems to be everywhere; is this one of the “it gifts” for teenage girls this year?

Burning Up On Tour with the Jonas Brothers

And how about “Honor Society,” the band that opens for the Jonas Brothers? The photograph below shows the band performing in Las Vegas Saturday night and they are also looking very preppy in their wardrobe selection.

If ever there were a prep aesthetic for a band it would appear to be these young men. If you have any doubt, take a look at the extra photos they have on their MySpace pages, including these of bassist Andrew Lee:

For today’s Pretty in Pink we offer Barbie: 50th Anniversary The Ultimate Collection book from the always fabulous Assouline publishing house.

Barnes & Noble is selling the Limited Edition Boxed Set, which has much beyond a standard hardcover book.

The boxed set is also available at Amazon.

Did TP ever share the deep and horrible tale from her youth about Barbie?  No?  Well then, to be brief: we did not have one.

Did. Not. Have. A. Barbie.  (Explains a lot, doesn’t it?)

The truth is, in an effort to instill proper values in her little Princess, TQM advised us prior to the one Christmas when we were positively begging for Barbie that we needed to choose between Barbie and the…

Ummmmm, well… it was actually a choice between Barbie… uhhhhh… er….um…….okay, fine – it was a choice between Barbie and the Beauty Parlor Doll!

The Beauty Parlor Doll. Yep. We opted for the Beauty Parlor Doll. The Beauty Parlor Doll was ‘lifesize’ and made of that dellightful aqua and pink plastic. It was *at least* as tall as TP, how is that for a mental picture?  As we are perilously close to the TMI line, we’ll cease sharing our innermost secrets. It’s just not done.

BTW, the Queen Mother rectified this tragic situation years ago, presenting us with our very own Barbie doll as a birthday gift.

May the rest of your day be splendiferous!
