Talbots Spring 2011 & Some Serious Tiffany Blue

Hello-Hello, happy Wednesday! Here at the Prepatorium we almost hear faint echos of “There’s Got to be a Morning After,” a comment made without a red, blue or purple influence, merely a means of saying we need to look at something lighter and brighter today, oui?

Fitting nicely in that category, the Talbots collection for Spring 2011.  We begin with two looks we love, both with an appealing and easy elegance.

Two ensembles that are a little too figure-hugging for this decrepit old woman. (Heh, heh, heh.)

Style has more on what inspired the designs in their story on the collection:

“… the 1950’s and the spiritual setting was Paris, so the silhouette is hourglass and the palette is macaroon bright.”

That Parisian influence is seen in almost every look.

We do note the fifties figure referenced, but not the “macaroon bright’ palette, at least we don’t see it in the images shown online. There are a lot of muted colors and hues.

The Style article touches on the retailer’s continued efforts at overhauling the brand, its image and its merchandise.

“But not to worry, Talbots has no intention of alienating its core audience. The classic blazer, cardigan, and white shirt are all still here, but with updated, “Grandma, can I borrow this?” fits.”

From comments left after previous posts about Talbots we know some readers are enjoying the new look, but others are not; here are two looks we aren’t crazy about.

They aren’t hideosities, just not for us. Back to the collection.

More nipped in waists and full skirts.

Cropped dress pants appear to be with us for many seasons to come.

The style on the left is pure Betty Draper, and the sheath on the right might also work in that capacity.

We are guessing that many of the fabrics used are better appreciated in person, silks and tweeds with a lush feel that feel better in the hand than they appear online.  While more than fond of basics in neutral tones, the lack of bright colors that really pop is disheartening. Next on our list of less intense topics, football players and fashion.  Below left we see Calvin Pace and on the right, D’Brickshaw Ferguson (who looks enormous) from the New York Jets, they promenaded down the runway as a fundraiser at Saks for the Jets Foundation.

Also looking stylish, Jim Leonard (L) and Kris Jenkins (R), the latter appearing even larger than Mr. Ferguson, if that is possible.

Women’s Wear Daily reports Mr. Jenkins’ custom-made sport coat was a 62 long.

Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany is almost as famous for its robin’s egg Tiffany Blue® as it is for its jewelry.  Every year the firm hosts a “Blue Book Gala,” where it showcases new merchandise. So how does one decorate for the event? Of course.

Tiffany & Co.

On hand for the gala, actress Byrdie Bell, adorned with (what else?) Tiffany jewels.

The company has posted a Facebook photo album with pictures of the event, should you be interested in seeing more images.

A few Pretty in Pink and Green goodies round out today’s fun and frivolity beginning with a sign of the season, the Lilly Pulitzer Christmas Ornament ($48) at Splash of Pink.

We also have Lilly Ornaments ($17.50) at The Princess.

One of the niftiest totes we have seen for next spring is from Balenciaga.

A little pink and green is always good for the soul.

One final note that *is* election-related, but we promise it falls in the fun and lighthearted category.  It involves yesterday’s post and this photo.

Do you see all of the literature stacked on the table? A comment on the post shares more:

“OMG. I am so excited to read this post today. The second picture down…yeah, I created that poster, brochure, and book. I never saw this photo before. Thanks for sharing!”

Kathleen at “Leggings are NOT Pants” shared that tidbit, very cool IOHO, and another great demonstration of why we so love the interwebs.

Goodbye until next time!

The Mad Men Barbie Collection, “Future Prep”

Hello-Hello, happy rainy day! Yes, we are so gaga over the warmer weather we are happy about the rain, it is so much nicer than the snow!

We start with absolutely delightful news: the folks at Mattel have made our favorite Mad Men characters into Barbie dolls. As the Guardian put it:

“It is a move that would have the male denizens of Sterling Cooper reaching for their whiskey and cigarettes. Don Draper, a symbol of pre-sexual revolution male values from the hit TV show Mad Men, is to be made into a Barbie doll.”

We think Joan Holloway and Betty Draper look simply smashing, their hair and makeup are captured perfectly, although Joan is nowhere near as curvaceous as on the show.

Unfortunately Don Draper and Roger Sterling aren’t as easy to depict, especially their clothing, an element key to the show’s success and cult following. Their suits just don’t translate well, they are not as well-tailored. Here is a comparison:

But then, these are merely 11-inch dolls, oui?

More on the wardrobe selections from amc’s Mad Men blog:

“Don Draper wears his classic, polished red-lined suit and comes accessorized with a hat, overcoat and brief case; Betty Draper’s classic look is captured with unparalleled detail, from her faux pearl necklace to her pumps; Joan Holloway looks chic in a purple skirt suit and perfectly styled coif with her staple accessory – a pen necklace; and Roger Sterling is looking dapper in his monogrammed shirt.”

Stuart Elliott’s column in today’s Times is excellent, loaded with interesting background on the Mattel deal and addressing almost every question that sprang to mind, including these:

“The dolls come with period accessories like hats, overcoats, pearls and padded undergarments, but no cigarettes, ashtrays, martini glasses or cocktail shakers.”

The dolls launch in July at a retail of $74.95, they will be available at the Barbie Collector site. (We apologize to our Facebook and Twitter friends for repeating this item, as we did Tweet and put the photo up on the Princess FB fan page as soon as we heard about the dolls, we simply couldn’t wait.)

We’re thinking a few bloggy friends may contemplate bringing Don home. So to speak. (You know who you are.)

We have a few quick SOTTs (Signs of the Times) to share:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are intrigued by a line from across the pond, Polistas.

Described by Luxist as “… the first true polo lifestyle brand made for polo players by polo players…”, the company is now launching a Polo Dress.

We enjoyed bouncing about the Polistas website.

We close with a few more looks from Paris Fashion Week, beginning with the Balenciaga fall collection, characterized by at least one trade magazine as “future prep”.

We are guessing the crewneck sweaters from designer Nicolas Ghesquiere contributed significantly to this appellation.

While there was some lovely pink and green in the collection we wouldn’t exactly refer to it as preppish. But doesn’t it look pretty, like candy, or Easter eggs?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a bit of retail bliss:

Remember when we chatted about Sperry opening retail stores in select locations?  The Kansas City store celebrated its grand opening on Saturday and the liquid refreshments look dreamy.

The clothes are also easy on the eyes, as is the footwear.

.

If interested in the company’s 75th Anniversary CVOs seen above right, they are now available online.  We initially stumbled on the party pix while gathering the info for today’s Pretty in Pink, the Seasonal Bahama.

Sperry Top-sider

We shall pray to the retail Pooh-bahs for a Sperry store in our corner of the globe someday.

Until next time dollfaces, grins and giggles!

The Anti-Prep x 2 (A Hilton Sister and…?)

Nicky Hilton

And we always thought Paris was bad. Bu then we saw Nicky’s “Ten Style Rules” on the Glam blog. Actually, to be fair, we were doing quite well reading the list, surprised to see several of Nicky’s Rules were actually in sync with many of The Princess’s. Among those we agree upon? Always have a good black pump in the closet & Don’t get carried away with each season’s ‘It’ Bag. But then we were horrified to see Number Four: “Wear your jewelry during the day. Its ALWAYS ok to wear diamonds.” Hello? Diamonds before five in the evening? Sigh. We do remember having the topic explained quite clearly at an early age. “No lady wears diamonds before 5 with the exception of those in her engagement and/or wedding rings.” End of conversation.

Steve Madden Bukled Horror #1 Steve Madden Bukled White

Then we simply had to share this. (Talk about being horrified!) It stands a solid chance of earning inclusion in this year’s Top 10 Anti-Prep Collection Items. These are compliments of Steve Madden. And we thought he had disappeared. This would be the Steve Madden Bukled in the Multi-Color and White models. At the risk of disappointing some of you *terribly* The Princess must advise you they are only available for pre-ordering at this time. They are NFS (Not for Sale) until June 29th. And to make it worse, they are a copy of a Balenciaga style, as seen here. If you are going to do something hideous, shouldn’t it be original?

We are now speechless.
