An Exciting New Product at The Princess

Hello-hello, it is an exciting day today here at the Prepatorium, we are all gaga about the release of a new item we have just had produced: behold, The Preppy Calendar:

The Preppy Calendar 2012

The 2012 Calendar is a joint project with The Preppy Ladybug, one of our most popular vendors.  A look at two of the months:

The Preppy Calendar 2012

Proudly made in the USA, the Calendar offers twelve months of oh-so-preppy designs, some readers may recognize the deft hand and fabulous artwork of Shannon, the creative whiz behind The Preppy Ladybug.

The Preppy Calendar 2012

Argyle, madras, and seersucker patterns are all part of the Calendar, it comes in a clear acrylic case that converts into an easel so it sits perfectly atop your desk, or anywhere you want to put it.

The Preppy Calendar 2012

Best of all? The price. It is just $12 and comes with our signature grosgrain ribbon tied around it, so it makes good gifting for the preps on your list.  The Calendar is available now at The Princess or at The Preppy Ladybug.

Do forgive us if we’re a little goofy over our newest product, we have been working with Shannon on it for so long we are tickled to actually see it on the site!

That’s it for today, until next time may the sun be shining and the cool breezes blowing in your corner of the globe. :)

Milly Opens Her Doors, & You Can Pre-Order Your Kate Middleton Wedding Gown (Pippa’s Too!)

Happy almost-weekend to everyone.

We are all about Friday fun today, beginning with nice news for those of us fond of Milly.

Milly New York

The company’s first store has opened.

Kyle Ericksen/WWD

Located at Madison and 73rd, this is the first physical store for Michelle Smith and company.  Eagle-eyed shoppers may have noted the presence of handbags in the photo above, a fairly new addition for the designer.  We are partial to the Sailboat Tote and the Rope Tweed Milly bag.

Milly New York

The store also has the new Mini Milly collection, and a shoe collection launches next year. There is talk of adding other product lines as well, Women’s Wear Daily has the story:

““Maybe we’ll do home, stationary and candles, but those may be a year out,” he said.

The gentleman quoted is the designer’s husband and company CEO, Andy Oshrin. It’s no secret we do like Milly, the notion of an even broader merchandise mix is very appealing.

The anchor motif seen above reminded us of the cutest bloomers we have seen in along time:

Rikshaw Design

These are from Rikshaw Design, a delightful firm specializing in hand-printed fabrics, started by the very talented Catherine Fitzsimmons in 2008. It’s obvious why we appreciate Ms. Fitzsimmon’s work, she previously worked for two companies we appreciate, she was a textile designer for Pottery Barn and also worked as a merchandiser for Ralph Lauren.  Below, several of the Bib and Burp Sets.

Rikshaw Designs

The bedding is also darling.

Rikshaw Design

The 100% cotton textiles and hand-quilting make the pieces special, there are also a variety of tunics and sundresses available for Mom.

Rikshaw Design

It is always nice to see new entrepreneurial endeavors, we wish Ms. Fitzsimmons the best.

Those who follow the Hollywood scene know we are in the first week of the Cannes.

Festival de Cannes

Angelina Jolie and Jack Black were on hand to promote Kung Fu Panda.

Joel Ryna/AP

Last night the stars were out for the big bash hosted jointly by the IFP (Independent Filmmaker Project), Calvin Klein Collection and Calvin Klein Euphoria. Below, model Natalia Vodianova and Uma Thurman (who is serving as a judge this year), both wearing Calvin Klein Collection.

Earlier this week Diane Kruger also was spotted in Calvin Klein Collection for the Sleeping Beauty première.

We do enjoy looking at party frocks!

Finally, good news for brides-to-be wanting a CopyKate gown similar to the Sarah Burton creation worn by Kate Middleton for her marriage to Prince William.  Remember that dress being done by ABS/Allen B. Schwartz?

It will soon be at Lord and Taylor, as well as ABS copies of the dress worn by Ms. Middleton for her evening reception, and the now-infamous Pippa Middleton gown.  Below, an image from the Lord & Taylor Wedding Shop website.

Via LordandTaylor.com

Racked.com has more:

“The dresses are scheduled to arrive in the department store’s Fifth Avenue flagship, Garden State stores, and on LordandTaylor.com in mid-July.

We did speak with L&T, they are taking pre-orders for the dresses now, the number to call is 212-391-3287.   The prices for the gowns are as follows:

  • the daytime gown will be $950;
  • the evening reception dress will be $450;
  • the bridemaid dress worn by Pippa Middleton will be $390

For a look at the version being done for Nordstrom, just click here. That dress won’t be available until September, it will run $698 USD.

With that, may everyone enjoy a restful weekend.

Fun Finds with Madras & Nautical Influences

Hello-Hello, and happy Monday.

It has been many moons since we did some virtual window-shopping, the day’s bright sun and warmer temps make us feel downright springy. Perusing spring and summer offerings online seemed a pleasant way to while away the morning while The Consort does all of the day’s work, we thought it might be fun to share just a few of the goodies we discovered. (Fair warning: today’s post carries absolutely no minimal content of substance.)

We begin with nautically-inclined items, below, LL Bean’s Casco Bay Regatta Tote (L), and Casco Bay Sailor Girl Print totes.

The Camden Embroidered Tote is a somewhat more substantial bag, with a zippered closure, available in Blue Anchors or Yellow Sailboats, as well as a whale pattern not shown here.

The nautical theme is also seen on the Camden Embroidered Daypack.

We have long been fond of a classic sailor shirt, Bean’s French Sailor’s Shirt comes in a variety of color combinations.

Our friend AgathaMChristie mentioned the fabulosity of Olive Juice clothing for her young Master & Miss of the house, we found this nautically-inspired tee there, it also comes in a variety of colors.

Summer’s heat and humidity may seem far away, but it won’t be long before the all-cotton Oceanside Sleep Shorts and a pair of Maine Isle flip-flops are just what Mother Nature requires.

The boating theme isn’t limited to our more practical purveyors, as evidenced by Oscar de La Renta’s one-piece at Saks, and Milly’s Charm Bracelet at Neimans.

Saks also has the darling Hartstrings outfit shown below left, while Florence Eiseman’s boy’s Marine Flags shortall is at Best Dressed Child, probably the single best source for infant and childrens’ sailor suits online.

Two more quick examples from BDC, both from Carriage Boutique.

If you are like us and madras makes you a little weak in the knees, we found a few possibilities. Bean offers a variety of madras bags, starting with the Leather Handled Madras tote in different sizes.

LL Bean

Madras may also be found in other styles, including this Patchwork Madras tote, but be advised it is a wee little thing, only 7″ x 7.5″.  The bag comes in two colors, the pink seen on the left and blue with Hibiscus leaves atop the patchwork fabric, not a look we are crazy about, but then, we aren’t exactly known for being fashion forward here at The Prepatorium.

There are charming belts in lovely colors at Bean, both the womens’ Seaport Seersucker Belts (L) and Seaport Plaid Belts (R) come in different colorways.

Staying with a nautical theme, the mens’ State of Maine belt is offered in both sailing and fishing designs.

If seeking additional grosgrain motifs we offer a multitude of choices here at the PP Mother Ship.

Our custom belts are available for kids, men and women, they run just $19 for children and $23 for adults.

Lands’ End carries many nautical items for the younger set, including the kids’ Sailboat Drawing and Sailboats beach towels. (We were curious about what distinguished a “kids” towel from others, these towels measure 30″ x 64″, while adult towels are 39″ x 78″.)

Lands’ End also has some enticing madras possibilities.  We begin with something for the MOTH (Man of the House), perhaps the Mens’ Bermuda Shorts will do.

For your little Princess, Lands’ End offers the Girls’ Washed A-line skirt in many different colors and patterns.

For the young MOTH, the Boys’ Long Sleeve Madras shirt is an option, as are the Boys’ Madras Shorts.

And despite our loathing of the logos at Polo Ralph Lauren, the company does madras well. Below left, the men’s Vaughn Sneaker, on the right, the Boys’ Blake Shirt.

The girl’s Madras Bucket Hat and boy’s Kensington Shortall are also cute.

One of the more intriguing items we saw at PRL is the pink madras Sandal & Bear Set for newborns. (It comes in gift packaging, making it an ideal shower present for those not bothered by someone else’s initials on their child’s footwear.)

Ralph Lauren

On that fun image we say goodbye until next time, may your Monday be marvelous.

Lisa Birnbach + Tommy Hilfiger = “Prep World”

Well, hello there. Did you say sunny and 75?

Sadly, if you were hopeful of a completely escapist post sans any mentions of the “S word” or “B word”, we are destined to disappoint.  Both of us have spent much too much time in Chicago (The Consort lived there for several years) to allow complete avoidance of last night’s storm.  Below, a view of Lake Shore Drive last evening.

Lauran Berta via Chicago Sun-Times

The conditions were beyond wretched, the road remains closed as of this writing, hundreds of people were trapped in a massive traffic jam for hours. How bad was it?  From a Trib story about the mess:

“With snow caked over the windows of his Honda, he called 911 for help. The dispatcher told him to use his best judgment.

So he turned off his engine to preserve gas, called his family to tell them that he was OK and split a snack-size Nestle Crunch bar with his friend.”

E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune

Lake Shore Drive remains littered with abandoned vehicles, above we show the road this morning. Below, a CTA bus that had to be abandoned.

Passengers were rescued after six hours.

Here is another look at LSD today, this one via ChicagoPhotoSho. The picture is rapidly going viral, perhaps because of its post-apocalyptic feel.

Another man’s story:

“Jim Kaczmarek said he was not rescued until 8:30 a.m. after spending more than 17 hours trapped on the drive… He said he called 911 several times, and was told officials were aware of the problem but couldn’t do anything about it.

He also called 311, where a woman who answered suggested he take a bus, flag a cab, or go to a homeless shelter.”

Mr. Kaczmarek also says he realizes he never should have gotten on Lake Shore Drive to begin with.  There is much discussion today about whether or not the City should have closed the road earlier, for more, click here for the Trib story.

Below, how Chicago firefighters got around.

We are more-than-grateful to be inside, warm and dry.

On to our primary topic today, news of “Prep World,” a collaboration between author best-selling author Lisa Birnbach and Tommy Hilfiger.

Courtesy Image via DailyFrontRow

The True Prep author and Mr. Hilfiger are launching a capsule collection with that moniker.  The marketing campaign includes what some call a “pop-up shop,” in this case one inspired by a Hamptons cottage.

John Aquino/Women's Wear Daily

Lisa Lockwood at WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) was first with the story yesterday, “A Marriage Made in Preppy Heaven“.

“Prep World, a capsule collection for women and men, will launch this spring with a global tour, featuring “drop-in shops” and events hosted by Hilfiger and Birnbach. The line will include 60 pieces that celebrate Hilfiger’s preppy classics with a twist, accessorized with such accoutrements as boat shoes, duck boots, Ping-Pong paddles and badminton rackets.”

Here are some of the photos accompanying the article.

John Aquino/Women's Wear Daily

More pieces in the upcoming collection.

John Aquino/WWD.com

We do like the look of these shirts, no surprise to those already familiar with our fondness for madras and nautical looks.

There are polos shirts in a rainbow of colors.

Style wrote about last night’s preview for fashion editors, “…at a gin-and-tonic-fueled party.”

“Interested shoppers can get their hands on the goods when the roving store opens in New York on April 28th. But, please, don’t be so vulgar as to call it a “pop-up.” Others pop; true preps “drop in.

Oops. Dopey Princess.

Women’s merchandise will run $35-$298, the men’s line will be priced at $45-$178; the chinos also have appeal.

We have seen the new line referred to as a “True Prep” collection, although we believe the proper name is simply “Prep World,” among other things, Vineyard Vines already has items showcasing the True Prep name.

Many of the new styles look promising, while others are clearly not for us.  Tee-shirts proclaiming “prep” simply don’t work at the Prepatorium, nor do logos. Of any kind.

Yet there are many items we saw with classic lines and appeal.

Via Style.com

The collection mirrors our ongoing conundrum with Mr. Hilfiger’s merchandise, sartorial confusion perhaps best described in this post from last fall about the designer’s runway collection for spring 2011.

“We begin with a brand that we always approach with trepidation; Tommy Hilfiger. (We fear one day we shall be attacked by a giant “TH” logo.)

John Aquino/WWD

Our post went on to say the looks were surprisingly attractive, as we had long ago relegated the designer’s work to nouveau-prep status, verging on Anti-Prep territory, it was that hideous.  But many publications have noted Mr Hilfiger’s efforts to “re-invent” his merchandise, we imagine this is part of that effort.

Daily Front Row also wrote about the upcoming line.

“Their limited edition collection offers modern-day Muffys and Cuthberts prep attire that melds European silhouettes with Americana sensibilities, along with necessary lifestyle adornments like cocktail shakers and croquet sets. The collection channels “Nantucket, in the summer… it’s traditionally preppy but it has a bit of grime to it,” Hilfiger said in a conversation with Birnbach this week. “You know, like a salty dog.”

(We do carry True Prep at The Princess, and have also done multiple interviews with Ms. Birnbach, click here and here for a sampling of the of those posts.) Below, springtime candy colors from the collection.

Here is a look at some of the creative you will see in the upcoming advertising campaign.

We cannot do a post without marking the significance of the day; we simply must note that there is Punxsutawney Phil and then there is Punxsutawney Till.

(With apologies to our Twitter pals for the repetition.)

Our other whimsical tidbit comes via our friend Christian over at Ivy Style.

An original Preppie video game, circa 1982, we had nary a clue such an item even existed. Just another example of why we love the interwebs. :)

Friday Fun of The Mostly Nautical Kind

Hello everyone, and welcome to a Friday; we hope everyone’s weekend looks promising, may there be no colossal weather events besetting any of our cherished readers.

Today we focus on springlike things in an effort to remind ourselves that the warmer temps and the next season are really just six weeks away (revisionist math it appears), we start with a darling item from the folks at Sperry:

Sperry Top-sider

That is one of the cutest key chains we have ever seen, the Original Boat Shoe Key Chain is available online for only $10; this one clearly peaks the Cute-o-Meter in the red zone.

Keeping our focus on a kinder, gentler Mother Nature, we bring you a few images shot for Nautica’s spring advertising campaign, we love the madras.

The nautical influences Nautica built its brand upon are evident throughout the collection.

Nautica’s spring collection is now online, below we show the Anchors Aweigh Polo for girls and the Anchors Onesie for infants.

Images from Nautica’s spring campaign may be viewed at the company’s flickr photo stream.

In keeping with the seaside theme we want to show off some of our newest goodies here at The Prepatorium, our line of Sailor Bags. Made out of real sailcloth, the bags are almost indestructible and come with a lifetime guarantee. First, the classic Duffel Bags.

Made from double-layered sailcloth, these have a waterproof liner and are loaded with pockets on the inside, plus a quick access pocket on the outside.

There is also a smaller, personal-size ‘Duffel Purse‘.

The Insulated Cooler Bags are outstanding.

Available in 8-pack to 24-pack size, the Coolers run $37 to $64. We like the outside pockets on these, as well as the velcro handle wrap.

All of our Sailor Bag merchandise may be personalized for an additional $12 charge.

No one will be surprised to hear that yours truly is interested in many items from this collection, including the Tote Bags.

Of particular note for those carrying lunch and other edibles to and from the office or school, the Lunch Bags ($29) offer a wider mouth to handle some of those take-out and plastic containers we all use now and again. The lining also pulls completely out for easier cleaning, and the handy outer pocket is ideal for silverware, condiments, and other necessities.

There is also a Lunch Sack ($20) for those not requiring quite as much room.

There are loads of other goodies on the site now (the poor Consort, he has been madly typing his little fingers to the bone getting these online) with more on the way, we do love this line.

While sailcloth bags are ideal any time of the year, we move back to springtime goods from Coach, promoting new its new pieces, such as the Alexis Tattersall Trench.

Frequent readers are aware of our incessant whining distaste for the heavily logoed merchandise Coach has pushed the last decade, but there are some solid possibilities for the younger set in the spring group. The Poppy Spring Blazer is rather interesting.

Also appealing, the Emma Blazer in black and fuchsia, if one can overlook the insignia on the pocket.

The classic lines accented by the lapel, pocket & cuff trim evokes a prep-school style.  The Tyler Flat is promising in two new colorways.

We remain fond of the Poppy Enamel Bow Bangle, here is the newest version.

On that fun and whimsical image, we say g’bye until next time!

‘Patently Preppy’ and ‘Prepster Deck’ Shoes

We start with an homage to the one and only Third Coast Preppy; when we saw this hat it simply shrieked TCP.

Courtesy Refinery 29

Courtesy Refinery 29

It may be difficult to discern because the photo is so dark, but the hat is a giant lobster.  The creation is by milliner extraordinaire Stephen Jones and was worn at a gala noting the opening of the V&A’s new show “Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones.

As always, we like to bring you news of ‘preppy perspectives’ around the world. Today’s comes via The National in Dubai.  Their story, Feet on the Ground, takes an in-depth look at the saddle shoe.

“…. think appliquéd college jackets, button-down Oxford shirts and rolled-up pants – footwear that wouldn’t be out of place at a boys’ boarding school circa 1950 is back in style. Two-tone saddle shoes – usually sporting a suede upper, contrasting leather and a red rubber sole – are a key look.”

Courtesy Paul Smith via The National
Courtesy Paul Smith via The National

Red rubber sole? We think not. A number of interesting assertions are put forth in the story; we do not concur with all of them, but suggest readers may still find it an interesting read. Another point:

“The patently preppy saddle shoe has infiltrated the streetwear market as well.”

Almost every brand we can think of seems to be included in the story, from Sperry to Gucci to Fred Perry.  Happy Reading!  (As an aside, the Paul Smith website shows a number of Mens’ Brogues, but not the style seen in the photo accompanying the article.)

Regular readers know we are simply batty for Paul Smith, especially their socks with the little bow.

Adoration of these is not our fault, it is something in our genetic makeup, we are quite sure.  (Tee-hee.)

Since we seem to be featuring shoes today, we’ll share a pair used in a story proclaiming the following to be *the style* to have this summer.  We generally wear a pair so beaten up they really are an assault on the eyes, but they are our favorites and we can’t bear the thought of discarding them!

Stephanie Prommer at the Teen Fashion Blog writes:

“This may sound crazy, but I predict that prepster deck shoes are going to be THE footwear choice of the summer. I’m personally crushing on these $60 Bahama Plaid Cuff kicks from Sperry Top-Sider, which come in five adorable color combos.”

They are available in a variety of delightful colorways, including this one:

We do adore the shoes, and think another blogger of a Prepalicious sort may have already featured them.

Speaking of Prepalicious, Miss Nautical, did you see this one at Bergdorfs from Stella McCartney?

Net-a-Porter also carries it and there is a coordinating sail print skirt as well.

We almost never-ever-ever do this, but today we post a springy message lifted directly from our electronic in-bin, compliments of Bergdorf’s.

Courtesy Bergdorf Goodman

The retailer was promoting their a pink theme.

On that note, ‘bye until next time!
