Weird, Wonderful & Wacky: the Top 15 Searches at The Princess

Hello-Hello, happy Tuesday!

We are blessed with a gorgeous day here at the Prepatorium and hope you are enjoying the same wherever you may be.

In yesterday’s post about making it (miraculously) to the million mark in blog viewers we promised to share the highest ranking search engine terms.  We’re going to share the Top 15, doing most of the list in a visual way and in reverse order.

We will start with the 15th and 14th most searched terms as they are so similar: Number 15 is “preppy blog” and Number 14 is “preppy style”, both equally difficult to describe with just one image.  The best we can do is share the brief back story on an ancient item of clothing, a basic turtleneck we purchased ‘back in the day’ when Abercrombie & Fitch stood for something worthwhile. When its name was Abercrombie and Fitch Country Clothiers. When the most one would see of a logo on anything carrying the brand’s name was this. Below left, the inside of said turtleneck and below right, the external tag at the hem of this piece of perfection.

For those interested in more on the topic (at least from our very early archives), we discussed the topic in Those Abercrombie Abs…Part One and Part Two, also probably the earliest mentions about our horrific case of LogoPhobia.  (Of course we still wear the turtleneck, it is in perfectly good condition!)

Number 13 is perhaps better explained by a map.

Fodor's

(The Hamptons.)

At Number 12,  a brand that once shone brightly in our little corner of the globe.

Lacoste

Number 11 covers a topic sadly featured in many posts, we’ll go with an image from The Snuggie at Fashion Week last fall.

PHOTO: Jason DeCrow/AP

Number 10: This individual is mentioned in multiple posts, but here (more than 2 years ago) we officially confer Anti Prep status upon her. And yes, we are aware the young woman has undergone some significant image rehabilitation, but official Anti-Prep membership carries lifetime status.

(Kim Kardashian, famous for being Kim Kardashian.)

Number 9 comes to us from TSU (The Spousal Unit, aka TC), in his post titled The Consort’s Version of Cash for Clunkers, or Carpe Auto:

Yugo? No go.

This one came as a surprise to us, here is Number 8:

Via Two Barking Dogs

The search is just one word, “fireworks”, not a term we would associate with the Princess blog, this oddity addles our little brain.

Very similar to Numbers 15 and 14, at Number 7 we have “preppy” and rather than search for one comprehensive or spectacularly preppish photo we shall take the wimp’s way out and simply show the full image from whence we found our avatar.

It would seem our affection for madras is deeply rooted.

Number 6:

NYC Prep Cast

Courtesy Bravo TV

This image may be one of the least familiar to our readers, it is the cast of NYC Prep, the one-season wonder chronicling the lives of ‘real prep school students’. Ahem.

Number 5 (from multiple posts on a Princess favorite, Goyard):

Number 4 (from multiple posts):

Kris Connor/Getty

Number 3 from Why There is no Preppy Princess Post Today:

The actual search term is iPhone, again – utterly baffling. Why on earth would anyone come here for that topic?

Coming in at Number 2:

Andrew Eccles/The CW Network

(Actor Chace Crawford in a publicity still from the inaugural season of Gossip Girl.)

And now (drum roll please) we share Number 1:

Andres Eccles/The CW Network

Our Number 1 most searched term also hails from the cast of Gossip Girl: Blake Lively.

As of this writing 19,538 searches for Blake Lively have brought people to the blog. Is anyone else troubled by this fact? Especially when we confess to never having seen a full episode of G2?

With that, we must solicit your thoughts: did any of these surprise you?

The Eyes Have It, Store Openings

Hello-Hello and welcome to another week, didn’t Saturday and Sunday just fly by?

We begin with a look at the new Tory Burch sunglasses, as seen on the designer herself in this ad.

This post on the Style File blog has more:

“The collection also features oversize squares and oversize rounds à la Jackie O, both with fairly subtle logo detailing on the arms.”

The line includes these foldable aviators.

We don’t want to forget a reminder about the ongoing sale at Tory Burch:

Ms. Burch is not alone in entering the optical market, Lilly Pulitzer is as well.

Here is a style we like, although they do not really exemplify those vibrant colors and cheery textiles associated with the “Lilly Look”. This is the Ella frame, and we adore the clean, spartan lines.

More in keeping with Lilly’s bright and sunny colorways, the Dasha frame:

The eyewear is also available in children’s styles, a nice touch. Below, the Gaby frame:

It is fascinating to see firms like Lilly and Tory Burch expand their product offerings.

Many readers know how we feel about the current incarnation of Abercrombie & Fitch, as detailed in this post (“Those Abercrombie Abs Part 1“) and in this post (“Those Abercrombie Abs Part 2“), in which we discuss the retailer as it used to be, back in the olden days, when the label looked like this, reading ‘Abercrombie and Fitch, Country Clothiers.’

TP's Turtleneck

The turtleneck partially shown above was just removed from storage and placed back on the shelf for another season of wear, despite the fact many might refer to it as ‘vintage clothing’.  It could be 25 to 30 years old, we really don’t recall, we only know it is très comfy and also retains a high snuggle factor, imperatives here at the Prepatorium.

(No, not this old, that’s from 1909!)

Back to the issue at hand: the wretched retailer opened its first store in Italy last week, only its second in Europe. On hand for the festivities surrounding the grand opening?

Indeed.

The new shop is also at one of our favorite haunts when seeking retail therapy, NorthPark in Dallas.

We’ll trust Hopsy and other Dallas bloggers to fill us in on how the new establishment is in person.

It wouldn’t be the Monday after Halloween if we didn’t gratuitously post about the costumes sported by Gossip Girl stars and IRL sweethearts Blake Lively and Penn Badgley. Ms. Lively was a flight attendant…

…while Mr. Badgley was unclear on exactly who/what he was portraying; he also happened to be celebrating his 23rd birthday.

We must excuse ourselves now and seek out a quiet place to ponder the events of last night.

Another New Crew & Let’s Get Private, Shall We?

Hello-Hello, happy-happy spring day to everyone, it is simply beautiful here at the Prepatorium! We hope each and every visitor is enjoying equally splendiferous weather!

We begin with a question, but first this must be read:

Congratulation for your $1,350,000.00 as grant from the Fondation De France. You are to send us the following details so that we can proceed to process your grant.

Name:
Address:
Occupation:
Sex:
Tel.

Our question: should we sell The Princess and cash in on the newfound riches described above? Heh-heh-heh.

Oddly, the return address for the email is a Hong Kong domain.

In a SOTT (Sign of the Times) that is almost sacriligeous, Abercrombie and Fitch is moving into the Hickey Freeman flagship store on Fifth Avenue. (Hickey is part of the bankrupt Hartmarx Corp.) According to Women’s Wear Daily:

“Hickey Freeman declined comment, but it’s likely the brand won’t set up another Manhattan flagship until the fate of its parent company is decided. With three bids on the table, Hartmarx could be sold or liquidated in coming weeks.”

Ouch.  An interesting side note: originally Abercrombie was scheduled to move into the now-vacant Brooks Brothers store on the corner, it remains vacant.

We have had some interesting comments on our post about the upcoming Gossip Girl spinoff, revealed in part of last night’s G2 show.  Serious G2 fans may enjoy seeing that two of the show’s stars managed to land places on Glamour’s list of the 50 Most Glamorous Women. Actress Blake Lively is #28, and co-star Leighton Meester is #26.

The company that originally published the Gossip Girl books, Alloy Entertainment, has a new entry in the land of shows about fictionalized private schools, aimed directly at teens and tweens.

The Times carried an interesting story on this:

“The company is preparing to introduce a show based on “Private,”… best-selling series of mystery novels for teenage girls, set at a fictional Connecticut boarding school.”

Girls can even audition for a spot to be in a commercial airing during the show:

The online series becomes available this Thursday; for more info, Private Novels seems to be the best place to start.

TP saw this stunner of a D&G blouse online and went gaga; we simply had to share it with everyone. Now, we have established the fact that we really don’t need any additions to the walk-in, this is common knowledge with the Prepitariate.

 D&G Dolce&Gabbana chiffon blouse

But one look at the silk chiffon print splashed with the anchor print and our heart melted. It is available in both white and navy. Let your conscience be your guide. Sigh.

With that we have to fly – enjoy your day, wherever you may be!

Spring Goodies and ‘BritPrep’ Arrives on the Scene

Hello-Hello everybody, and Happy Weekend!

There is an old saying that those of us living in the Great Midwest enjoy two, not four, seasons: there is winter, and then there is the construction season. And while the adage isn’t entirely true, we acknowledge succumbing to a raging case of Spring Fever Friday, a syndrome most difficult to contain and almost impossible to control.

With that in mind, we are excited to share some of the new treasures here at The Princess!  We begin with our new Seaworthy Collection, its style enhanced by nautical influences. Below, the Beach House placemats in authentic madras….

pmbeachhouse11

We love them because they are 100% cotton, just fine in the washing machine, and they are also reversible, providing two looks for the price of one!  Of course there are matching napkins in a snappy red stripe, or the matching blue stripe.

The Sailor’s Knot Napkin Rings add a great touch.

Also new to our little shop, the One, Two, Three Lilly Pad from our Lilly Pulitzer Stationery & Gifts collection.

.

Here is help for those struggling with different lists, as this is actually three separate notepads under one cover. Labeled Home, Work & Play, we are more than hopeful these might help TP improve her organizational skills here at the Palace!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on our list, a question about an issue we have struggled with for several days. The challenge isn’t our reluctance to ask for your opinion. Rather, it is because the issue itself is the nature of the photograph that actually *is* the issue. Obviously you will understand why we find it vulgar, but even that isn’t the issue. Anyone opening a fashion magazine in the last several years is familiar with the Marc by Marc Jacobs print campaigns.

DAISY LOWE PHOTOGRAPHED BY JUERGEN TELLER

DAISY LOWE PHOTOGRAPHED BY JUERGEN TELLER

Here is our question: Is this appropriate for the hypothetical readers of Teen Vogue?  That’s all. We are merely attempting to determine the level of our fuddy-duddyness; are we over the top finding this not proper for inclusion in a magazine targeted at that particular demo? We are ever-so-appreciative-in-advance for your candid comments and insight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers know a fave read of ours is The Luxist, with a finger firmly on the pulse of all things posh.  Recently they took a look at Barbour and their efforts to expand their customer base with a collection named BritPrep.  The Luxist’s Jared Paul Stern fills us in:

“So what exactly is “Britprep”? According to Barbour, the look is not quite as clean and crisp as American Preppy. Simple, stylish, and contemporary, the collection “pays particular attention to fashion, color and tradition capturing the essence of ‘Britishness.'”

Courtesy Barbour via Luxist.com

Courtesy Barbour via Luxist.com

The new line looks as if it may offer some intriguing possibilities for one’s walk-in.  TP has always adored Barbour; for decades they adhered quietly to their own fine standards, with exquisite attention to detail, very much like the old Abercrombie & Fitch. (The current company using the A&F name bears no resemblance whatsoever to its predecessor. None.)

Another look:

The only fly in the ointment, so to speak? There are pieces sure to induce a serious bout of  Logophobia:

“Barbour has never really gone in for logos, but with the Britprep collection (above) they’re employing a new crest. Unlike designers who invent crests, it’s an authentic bit of heraldry deriving from the original Barbour family coat of arms originating in Galloway, Scotland.

On a lighter note, we wanted to share another addition to the When Pink Goes Bad gallery:

Dr. Martens at Zappos.com

Don’t be worried about missing out on these dolls, they are available in an amazing array of colors, and sizes.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other news, word that ANTM (we have finally figured this acronym out and are feeling ever-so-hip, it is America’s Next Top Model) is also doing apparel. The tip for this comes from one of our fave daily blog reads, All the Rage at the LA Times website, and apparently the collection can be found at Wal-mart.

We presume you will sleep better this evening knowing this is available. (Ooooh, the Princess is a Crankenstein!)

We must fly, but hope you have a splendid spring weekend!
