Pink & Green Monday

Hello-Hello, gobble-gobble and all good thoughts to those kind enough to pop in for a visit.

We share but a mere tidbit this Friday after Thanksgiving, one of those rare instances where we toot our horn and write about the Preppy Princess store.

Pink & Green Monday at

A Preppy Collaboration

Happy Monday, it was a hectic weekend here at the Prepatorium, the days ahead are destined to be even busier, eek!

We begin with a look at another design partnership, this one between a longtime favorite, Pendleton, and retailer Eddie Bauer. The two companies from the Pacific northwest have collaborated since the 1920s, below we see a page from the 1948 Eddie Bauer catalog, the first year Pendleton products were shown in that catalog.

Pendleton/Eddie Bauer

The new collection is geared for the holidays, Bedding & Home items include classic Pendleton motifs.

The Christmas stockings are $59.95, crafted of pure wool. The jacquard wool tote is $199.95, the wool shirt comes in two colorways and runs $129.95.

There are also items for your MOTH (Man Of The House), including these.

The collection is available now.

Our other item today involves an update on the much ballyhooed Versace for H&M collection, launching this Thursday in London, on Saturday in the States. We wanted to follow up not because we believe our treasured readers are enormous Versace fans (although there is a plethora of Pretty in Pink), but because of the analogy made in our post between this launch and the Missoni for Target problems.  First, a backgrounder on the “issues” (there’s a euphemism) faced by Le Boutique Targét with the Missoni launch:

“We all know what happened recently with Missoni for Target–that collection disappeared instantly, online shoppers got $25 consolation gift cards instead of cute zigzagged coffee cups, and items showed up on eBay for exorbitant prices.”

That comes via Fashionista. Not mentioned, the issue of Target’s website going down. For hours.

At any rate, it turns out H&M has rules in place to prevent just the kinds of issue outlined above, especially the re-selling of products at online auction sites like ebay.  From The Telegraph here are rules for those shopping in London.

Shoppers will be allowed in stores in groups of 20, with a shopping allowance of just 10 minutes. Customers can only buy one of each item and only in one size to stop customers buying for their friends or bulk-buying popular styles to sell on eBay.

Fashionista also has been been told the guidleines will be similar for US shoppers. Of course, the biggest distinction between this launch and Missoni for Target is the lack of online sales, the giant retailer isn’t expected to offer that until next year.

We have two quick Sales & Savings Opportunities to pass on, the first comes via the folks at Vineyard Vines, a reminder its Friends & Family promotion offering 25% off everything ends at midnight. Use promo code FAMILY to receive the discount.

Also, J. Crew is offering an additional 30% off sale merchandise, both online and in store.

The promotion is good through Sunday night (the 20th), the promo code is MUSTHAVE, it is *not* applicable at factory stores.

“Preppy Clothes Under $100,” & Don Draper on Four Legs

Hello-Hello, welcome to a Thursday here at the Prepatorium.

We have many headline-style tidbits to share today, we start with a look at FabSugar’s feature, “10 Key Pieces to Give Your Look a Preppy-Cool Spin For Under $100“. Below, the Asos Short Duffle (on sale at $74, originally $123) and the Lucca Couture Striped Cardigan ($41 at Revolve Clothing).

From the story:

…preppy pieces with a twist give our Fall wardrobes serious pep. The look we’re seeking is a cross between classic and a touch of the nouveau pop…

Below we show Anthropologie’s Sans Collar Blazer ($98) and J. Crew’s Deck Stripe Boater Tee ($39.99 on sale).

Anthropologie & J. Crew via FabSugar

Perhaps our favorite item was the BDG Satchel, $58 at Urban Outfitters.

BDG Satchel

As always, many things aren’t going to work for this old crankenstein your faithful correspondent, but we do enjoy seeing how others perceive the style.

Next, word that Brooks Brothers is going to be offering merchandise on home shopping channel ShopNBC. (Perhaps today’s “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up“?) From the Home Shoppingista:

This just in: The odd couple of Brooks Brothers and Carson Kressley are on their way to ShopNBC. The No. 3 home shopping network will debut merchandise from the the retailer of upscale preppy clothes in November.

This all happens November 18, more on the event(?) via Yahoo Finance:

Debuting during ShopNBC’s All Star Event, the one-hour show will be the brand’s first foray into TV home shopping. As part of the Brooks Brothers’ premiere on ShopNBC, the one-hour show will feature elegant leather handbags, cashmere wraps, and silk scarves.

We’ve known it was coming but hadn’t really accepted the sad news about from an American classic until today: Steuben is shutting its only factory November 29 and the liquidation sale is underway. For those interested in a bargain, the sale is online as well as in stores.

Although the company hasn’t been what it used to be it’s still a shame to see it close.

Finally this afternoon, we simply have to share a few images from this year’s annual Halloween Dog Parade at Tompkins Square Park.

Tilly was especially taken by ‘Tank,’ sporting “The Runaway Bride” style.

Knowing how many readers are eager to see the return of Don Draper, we wanted to include this look.

While the longer hair is a new look for Don, we like it. To see more four-legged friends in their Halloween finery, click here.

The Bride Wore…Black?

Hello-Hello! We are ever-so-grateful to be back with our treasured readers, power has been restored to The Prepatorium, that was a tad more excitement than we needed when returning from our mini-getaway.

New York Bridal Week just wrapped up, there were some lovely styles shown and we hope to share more of them later this week. But today we wanted to take a look at several of Vera Wang’s wedding dresses, as the designer took a different approach for many of her fall 2012 frocks.

Vera Wang Courtesy Images

The gowns show all of Ms. Wang’s signature traits, luxurious fabrics, lots of volume, ruffles and ruching, many (many) layers.

Vera Wang Courtesy Photos

There were also black overlays atop nude.

Vera Wang Courtesy Photos

The gowns are simply gorgeous, that much is obvious, Ms. Wang knows her craft. This is not her first foray into colors other than white, not at all. But it is the only time I recall seeing a host of black bridal gowns, these were not intended as bridesmaid’s dresses.  I imagine that if black gowns become popular it will be seen as an outgrowth of the recession, although that seems ludicrous, anyone purchasing a Vera Wang dress is not likely to be feeling a pinch to their pocketbook. Your thoughts ladies….? New and cool, or just too outré?

Also today, a few Sales and Savings opportunities we thought you might find intriguing. First, Lord and Taylor’s ‘Friends & Family’ promotion is underway, offering 25% off most merchandise. The nice thing about the L & T sale is the inclusion of beauty and cosmetics. The promo code is FRIENDS.

Lord & Taylor

Saks is also doing Friends and Family, the discount is 20% off, but cosmetics are not included in the promotion this year.

Saks Fifth Avenue

In fact, the list of merchandise excluded from the offer is lengthy (referred to as ‘novel length’ by our friend Whale Flip Flops), here is the list:

Exclusions apply for only: Acne, Donna Karan apparel, Ippolita, L’Agence, men’s Maison Martin Margiela shoes, MM6 Maison Martin Margiela apparel, Mikimoto and T by Alexander Wang.

Now, to be fair, a case can be made that Saks carries more high end merchandise that has restrictions imposed by the vendor; that is almost always the source of the exclusion, a condition of selling the merchandise can be that discounts are not allowed at all, or not permitted above a certain percentage off retail. If shopping at Saks, use promo code FRIEND9 for the discount.

As a comparison, here is the Lord & Taylor list:

The following exclusions apply to this offer:

25% OFF regular & sale promo code: FRIENDS excludes: Lunch break!™
REGULAR & SALE PRICE ITEMS FROM Allen Edmonds, Aquatalia, Coach, Converse, Ecco, FitFlop, Frye, Hunter, Jeffrey Campbell, Johnston & Murphy, Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes, Merrell, Movado, Nicole Miller Bridal, Tag Heuer, Tumi & Ugg; men’s Cole Haan shoes, men’s Lacoste shoes.
DEPARTMENTS: Diamond solitaire rings and special event promotions in Fine Jewelry; charity-related merchandise; Smart Value items & gift cards. Not valid on Limited-Day Specials & selected special sale events.

The Saks exclusion list is hefty by any standards. Our thanks to Lila at Madison Avenue Spy for pointing out the distinction about cosmetics being excluded from the Saks sale this year.

On that note we say goodbye until next time, we’re still playing catch-up here in the office!

About That Melted Ice Cream Truck You’ve Seen

Hello-Hello, welcome to a steamy hot Thursday here in The Great Midwest.

Once again we are very brief, business duties are curtailing time for the blog, so today we share a number of quick hits about products or lines new to the market that have a preppish feel or style.  We begin with Harding-Lane, a New England company launched this year by a brother and sister team in Massachusetts.

Courtesy Harding-Lane

Harding-Lane offers a new twist on the classic baseball cap: needlepoint icons, all with a nautical wildlife feel, have been added to this standard item, definitely taking it up a notch on the fashion scale.

Courtesy Harding-Lane

The caps are $24.99, they are proving so popular that some styles have already sold out.  You can learn more about the company at the website, or at Harding-Lane’s Facebook page. The company’s slogan is “high tides and green grass forever,” congratulations to Steve and Sarah for what is clearly a successful launch.

Another new endeavor that may be of interest to readers, Dress for the Game, an online boutique featuring dresses for game day wear. The idea for the site was Heather Chesser’s, she has a painful college memory of wearing the wrong thing to a SEC football game and wants to provide alternatives in school colors for others facing a dress dilemma.

There are dresses and accessories for several schools, categories have names like Geaux Tigers, Dawgs and Go Gators.  Below we show Orange You Classy and Ruffles and Bows.

The company also has a Facebook page for those interested in learning more via that site. We send best wishes to Heather for success with her new shop.

We have a Sales and Savings opportunity that many readers will find appealing, it is almost time for the Just Madras annual Christmas in July sale, it starts Saturday.

Just Madras

The sale gives shoppers a 25% discount on everything that is in stock, use promo code Christmas at checkout. The sale starts Saturday (the 23rd) and runs through Monday.

Just Madras

Finally today, an image many have already seen, it has been shared in abundance online and crops up again every year when a big summer heat wave hits.

Via Serious Seats

As mentioned, the “It’s so hot the ice cream truck melted” image has made the rounds over the years, but we didn’t realize there were other images of it.

Being completely OCD a little inquisitive we decided to try and find out the origins of the truck. It turns out the truck was created by Australian advertising agency The Glue Society. This next photo is from November, 2006, when the truck was part of the annual Sculpture by the Sea event in Sydney.

And here is a different angle as shown on The Glue Society’s website.

Via The Glue Society

Anyway you look at the artwork, it is very cool. Pun intended. (Oh, what a dopey Princess!)

Until next time, we hope everyone is able to stay relatively cool, and if you have time, reach out and do a quick check of someone you know who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

Talbots Holiday 2011 and A Few Sales/Savings Opportunities

Hello-Hello, welcome to an absolutely gorgeous day here at the Prepatorium.

It seems like just last week we were engaged in a whineathon of epic proportion desperate for just a taste of spring or summer weather.  Fast forward a few weeks and now many friends find themselves praying for an early fall, it has been that hot or that dry or that wet, or simply that miserable in their corner of the globe. In that spirit we offer an early look at this year’s holiday collection at Talbots.

Women’s Wear Daily attended yesterday’s preview and has the story.

“Inspired by Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball of 1966, Michael Smaldone, Talbots’ chief creative officer, showed a holiday collection on Wednesday that was minimalistic, with a nod to easy Sixties glamour.”

There are some nice, bright jewel tones in the line.

It’s always good to see a splash of color in the middle of winter.

Another angle on the more vibrant colors.

Robert Mitra/WWD

Here are a few of the more casual styles.

Robert Mitra/WWD

It looks like Talbots will continue to grow its workout/athletic/yoga group, an area that remains a very positive story for most retailers. (Full disclosure; your trusty correspondent has a few pieces from this group and they are outstanding.)

Robert Mitra/WWD

There is a wonderful array of pieces in a deep, rich red, perfect for the holidays.

Robert Mitra/WWD

More from the WWD story:

“Smaldone focused on clean shapes, from long column gowns to short A-line dresses, as well as graphic black-and-white elements on looks such as a long houndstooth skirt.”

More in these colors.

Also seen more frequently this time of year, lamé and sequins, with a few animal prints also visible.

Robert Mitra/WWD

There are more jewel tones shown in the holiday accessories.

Robert Mitra/WWD

A few more items.

Robert Mitra/WWD

These are a bit tougher to see, but you can still get an idea of what will be offered.

Robert Mitra/WWD

Many of the styles shown look elegant, although it is obviously difficult to gauge when you can’t feel the fabric, look closely at the cut, the embellishment, etc.  We fervently hope the collection helps the troubled retailer get back on track, we would like to see them around for many years to come.

We have a very few Sales and Savings Opportunities to offer.

Kate Spade is taking an additional 25% off sale prices, use promo code SALE25 for the discount. (Today is the last day.)

Brooks Brothers is doing its summer Clearance event.

Vineyard Vines is taking an additional 40% off its sale items, use promo code HOT. One caveat, this morning they have experienced numerous outages and downtime for the website. We’re sure it will be remedied as quickly as possible, but patience might be required.

Basically every apparel & accessories retailer we know of is offering significant discounts at its stores (as well factory/outlet stores) and online.

One last FYI, we are doing a poll at our sister site What Kate Wore, Kate’s wearing of pantyhose/tights/nylons almost all the time is creating quite the conversation. We would love to know what you think, either by vote or comment or both!

With that, we say thank you for popping in to visit, we cherish each and every reader, knowing you have a gazillion choices when it comes to online reading opportunities. We are grateful you decided to spend a little time with us. 🙂
