A New King for The Consort’s People & Gatsby Premières

Hello-Hello, it is another glorious day here at the Prepatorium. I hope you are enjoying similar sunshine in your corner of the globe.

As readers may know, there were quite the royal happenings last weekend in Amsterdam. More from the New York Times:

To the cheers of tens of thousands of people crammed shoulder to shoulder outside the royal palace here, Willem-Alexander of the House of Orange-Nassau became the Netherlands’ first king in 123 years on Tuesday as his mother, Queen Beatrix, ended a 33-year reign with the stroke of a pen, signing the act of abdication in an ornate chamber at the palace.

We may have paid a little more attention than most because The Consort’s heritage is Dutch.  At any rate, there were multiple events, each entailing some very. serious. party frocks.

The new Queen wore a dress by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau, seen below with Máxima’s gown.

But Máxima wasn’t the only one exuding elegance, there were eye-popping ensembles from the guests.

Where does one go for sartorial insight at times like these? The Royal Order of Splendor, bien sûr. Especially if interested in learning who is wearing what uniform, and why.

But it wasn’t only pretty party dresses we saw, nay-nay. There was an abundance of shiny things, it was time to break out the bling.

We were intrigued by the blue dresses worn by the daughters of King Willem and Queen Máxima.  Below you see the new heir to the throne, Princess Amalia of Orange (the oldest), and her sisters, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane.

They wore dresses from a brand I was unfamiliar with, NATAN, designed by Edouard Vermeulen. More from Expatica:

…designer Edouard Vermeulen was commissioned to design a dress for the king’s wife, princess Máxima, and her three little daughters. Vermeulen jumped at this honour even though he had never designed garments for children.

A closer look.

Back to the Expatica story:

The princesses could choose their favourite fabrics and styles. “And rightfully so. It was important for them to feel pretty and comfortable.” The girls were dressed in a similar style, but each dress reflected their individual taste.

“Máxima had no preconceived ideas about their outfits and neither did I, actually. The designs literally developed as we worked together, except perhaps for the colour, royal blue, which was pretty much established

Earlier the young ladies were in dresses by an upscale Spanish brand, Pili Carrera.

A better look at the dress, this time all three wore the same style.

It is always fun to learn about new designers.

Our other topic today, a very quick look at some of the events surrounding the opening of The Great Gatsby. Below, film director Baz Luhrmann, Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Meyer, Tobey Maguire, and designer Miuccia Prada at a cocktail party Tuesday.

More from the Hollywood Reporter:

Another day, another Gatsby exhibit. Albeit with dazzling dresses, A-list celebs and the non-stop flow of Champagne, this one would have surely made Jay Gatsby proud.

Dubbed Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, the Tuesday night soiree — held at Prada’s Soho boutique — showcased 40 head-to-toe costumes that the evening’s headliners collaborated on for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film.

Last night was the film’s première. Below we see Carey Mulligan, she stars as Daisy.

Ms. Mulligan looked almost incandescent in a Lanvin dress and Tiffany earrings. Leonardo di Caprio wore Prada, the label created several costumes for the film.

Director Baz Luhrmann was in Brooks Brothers.

Brooks created hundreds of costumes for the film. They have also just launched a Great Gatsby collection. Following the film there was quite the do at The Plaza, back to Women’s Wear Daily.

The over-the-top after party, where dancers dressed like flappers and hoisted 1921 vintage Moët & Chandon bottles, drew the film’s entire cast, although leading man Leonardo DiCaprio was protected from the masses by a number of beefy bodyguards. Other celebs were more accessible, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Amitabh Bachchan, Joel Edgerton, Sacha Baron Cohen (mingling with his wife, Isla Fisher) and Gabriel Byrne.

And then there’s this: I have never, at least not knowingly, posted a GIF (like an animated image) here on the blog. But it seems the time has arrived to change that.

Clearly it doesn’t take a lot to get us excited here at TPP InterPlanetary HQ.
