The Bride Wore…Black?

Hello-Hello! We are ever-so-grateful to be back with our treasured readers, power has been restored to The Prepatorium, that was a tad more excitement than we needed when returning from our mini-getaway.

New York Bridal Week just wrapped up, there were some lovely styles shown and we hope to share more of them later this week. But today we wanted to take a look at several of Vera Wang’s wedding dresses, as the designer took a different approach for many of her fall 2012 frocks.

The gowns show all of Ms. Wang’s signature traits, luxurious fabrics, lots of volume, ruffles and ruching, many (many) layers.

There were also black overlays atop nude.

The gowns are simply gorgeous, that much is obvious, Ms. Wang knows her craft. This is not her first foray into colors other than white, not at all. But it is the only time I recall seeing a host of black bridal gowns, these were not intended as bridesmaid’s dresses.  I imagine that if black gowns become popular it will be seen as an outgrowth of the recession, although that seems ludicrous, anyone purchasing a Vera Wang dress is not likely to be feeling a pinch to their pocketbook. Your thoughts ladies….? New and cool, or just too outré?

Also today, a few Sales and Savings opportunities we thought you might find intriguing. First, Lord and Taylor’s ‘Friends & Family’ promotion is underway, offering 25% off most merchandise. The nice thing about the L & T sale is the inclusion of beauty and cosmetics. The promo code is FRIENDS.

Lord & Taylor

Saks is also doing Friends and Family, the discount is 20% off, but cosmetics are not included in the promotion this year.

Saks Fifth Avenue

In fact, the list of merchandise excluded from the offer is lengthy (referred to as ‘novel length’ by our friend Whale Flip Flops), here is the list:

Now, to be fair, a case can be made that Saks carries more high end merchandise that has restrictions imposed by the vendor; that is almost always the source of the exclusion, a condition of selling the merchandise can be that discounts are not allowed at all, or not permitted above a certain percentage off retail. If shopping at Saks, use promo code FRIEND9 for the discount.

As a comparison, here is the Lord & Taylor list:

The following exclusions apply to this offer:

25% OFF regular & sale promo code: FRIENDS excludes: Lunch break!™
REGULAR & SALE PRICE ITEMS FROM Allen Edmonds, Aquatalia, Coach, Converse, Ecco, FitFlop, Frye, Hunter, Jeffrey Campbell, Johnston & Murphy, Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes, Merrell, Movado, Nicole Miller Bridal, Tag Heuer, Tumi & Ugg; men’s Cole Haan shoes, men’s Lacoste shoes.
DEPARTMENTS: Diamond solitaire rings and special event promotions in Fine Jewelry; charity-related merchandise; Smart Value items & gift cards. Not valid on Limited-Day Specials & selected special sale events.

The Saks exclusion list is hefty by any standards. Our thanks to Lila at Madison Avenue Spy for pointing out the distinction about cosmetics being excluded from the Saks sale this year.

On that note we say goodbye until next time, we’re still playing catch-up here in the office!

I just have to say that those black wedding dresses look like they would be perfect for an Addam’s Family inspired nuptials. If I were Vera Wang, I would call it her Morticia collection.

The gowns are TDF!!!!! Thank goodness I didn’t have to select one of those gowns to wear because I would NOT have been able to do so. Getting married way back when was easier when white was the only choice!

  4. That list from Saks is a little ridiculous, don’t you think, I mean seriously whats the point of a sale, they might save a lot of paper by just putting the names that the sale IS for!
Black gowns..love them and there are many beauties above but sorry for a wedding gown, I give it a thumbs down. Something about it feels foreboding for a bride to wear black like surely they are doomed, white is so pure and uplifting.

  5. The dresses are gorgeous, of course, but I can’t imagine wearing black to my wedding. I think a wedding is one of the few times in life where you absolutely, 100% want to dress traditionally and timelessly. I remember Sarah Jessica Parker got married in a black dress and she’s since remarked how much she regrets it.

  6. Those Veras are lovely, but bridal black isn’t for me. Happy that others may have the choice, though.

Thank you for the Saks sale reminder as well. Though that exclusion list is formidable, I will bravely soldier on.

  7. Vera is wonderful however this is Bridal Noir, and I just don’t like it. The gowns I love, just not for a bride.Call me Traditional!

Do come and enter my Designer Pillow Giveaway!! (Also a great resource)

Well, you know, historically, brides DID wear black, that is to say, the nicest dress they had; white is a fairly recent invention.

  9. Ok Saks, that is just ridiculous. I actually like the Vera Wang gowns, of course not for a bride, but for a ball or gala!!
