The Good, the Bad, and The Preppy.

Happy Friday everyone, direct from Princess HQ in “the country’s frozen midsection.”  (Is it just us, or does this sound like an area of the body desperately in need of cosmetic surgery?)

Having ripped off completely borrowed liberally for the title of our post, let us do The Good first, shall we?

The Good would definitely cover the delightful person responsible for surprising us with this:

Thank you Miss Breaking News!

Now, there are some rules associated with this honor:

  • Put the logo on your blog or post.
  • Nominate at least 10 blogs which you think are fabulous.
  • Be sure to link to your nominees within your post.
  • Let them know that they have received this award by commenting on their blog.
  • Share the love and link to this post and to the person from whom you received your award.

Here are ten more blogs that we just adore (not to mention Breaking News!) and read almost every day:

Down the Line Tennis

Fashion Herald

Imelda Matt (his logo is so fun)

Imelda Matt

Imelda Matt

Lilly P. Wannabe

Misadventures of a Newlywed

Muffy Martini

The Pink Tutu

Puttin’ on the G.R.I.T.S.

The Roaming Southerner

Steak and Cakes

Now we do the Five Addictions:

#1. Silly Tilly & Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat

#2. Literature. Of any kind.PHOTO: Somos Images/Corbis

#3. The fabulosity that is Mad Men.

#4. At least we’re not alone with this next one:

#5. Our issues with #4 require vigilance; one of these is clipped on as soon as we are dressed.

As far as The Bad is concerned, regular readers won’t be surprised to see news of 1,100 layoffs at our favorite retailer, that isn’t making us feel any better about the future at Saks.  As the Financial Times put it:

“Saks’ cost-cutting follows news on Wednesday from its rival Neiman Marcus that it was shedding 375 jobs, or about 3 per cent of its staff, after seeing December comparable sales fall by almost a third.

Tiffany, the jewellers, reported a 35 per cent fall in comparable sales at its US stores in November and December, and has said it is considering further cost-cutting measures, having already offered early retirement packages to some 800 employees.”

Or as the Jewelry Designer Extraordinaire Wendy Brandes put it:

Saks is still having its crazy sale. If you buy something, they might also throw in some store fixtures and a few sales associates.”

And double-ouch for anyone employed at Circuit City, or holding a giftcard from the latest in the liquidation line.

Are we the last one on the planet to learn that The Preppy Potato closed?  Just above the “Spring Coming Soon” graphic on their home page is the following message:

“We have decided to close shop. Thank you for your years of business. We have enjoyed working closely with all of you.”

For those unfamiliar with the company, the Potato offered belts with classic icons; they could also be monogrammed.  (Two shown below.)

What a shame.

Frankly, we should have put that little item above in with The Bad. Oh well.  Thank you again Miss Breaking News, we are ever-so-grateful for your generosity!

With that we say “Adieu” until the next time. Do enjoy your weekend and stay warm!

  1. Why thank you for including me in your “Good” and giving me an award! I also must say that I love your addictions. Especially the wonder cat. What an animal. And as for the comment about the ‘Crazy Saks Sale…’ I honestly could use a Sak’s associate around the house….

  2. Thank you for the award! Very sad news about Saks, etc. 😦

  3. PP has been closed for awhile now, at least since last summer.

  4. That’s sweet – thanks!

  5. HONORED, TP!! maybe this time I’ll actually get around to doing this??! I love the tilly/scooter photo, a classic. And I’m scared for Saks, although if one is in DC they have to go not to Tysons, but to the beautiful Chevy Chase store if they have the option. of course next week no one is really going anywhere in dc.

You aren’t the last to know about the Preppy Potato, as this is news to me too! Very sad…I have a PP belt that I love.

And I will go there: You like me, right now, you really like me!?!

    Made my night…thank you

  8. Happy New year to the Princess and Consort and in fact, all of the Preppy Royal family! 🙂 Your five addictions are all truly good ones – I lon for Mad Men to be one of mine – but alas, some pea brain has scheduled it to start over here way past my bed time. The dresses are truly fabulous! Almost makes me dribble.

  9. Congratulations for your award!!! Read in one of my little addictions too!!! I really love read!!

  10. parkavechar

I am obsessed with mad men! It’s amazing 🙂

  11. I was sad about Pretty Potato too when I saw that on their site. I wish there had been some explanation….

  12. Hey Princess! I am watching the Today Show and someone just told Matt Lauer that Michelle Obama has not chosen what she is wearing for the Inauguration or the Ball. Are you kidding me??? I hope she doesn’t shock us with another disaster like the dress she wore Election Night! Goodness… Preppy 101 is appalled 😉 What have you heard???

Congrats on the award!! I am with you on Mad Men. We can chat it up about it when it comes back!! xoxo

  13. Thanks for the updates. Not surprised about saks- they never captured the younger crowd, seemed out of touch for some time now. Now if it were Bloomingdales, I would be crying in my tea… or wine.

  14. Princess, I had to stop by tonight to tell you HOW EXCITED I am about tomorrow!! Now of course you know I am excited about our new president…..but oh my goodness!! What will Michelle Obama wear???? Can’t wait to stop by your blog on Wednesday and see your assessment of what she finally chose!

  15. Congratulations!!!! And, I love your list of five addictions. The picture of Silly Tilly & Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat is sooooo cute!!

  16. I have yet ANOTHER award for you on my blog!

  17. Thanks SO very much for the award!! I am so honored 🙂 I just love reading your fabulous blog. Have a wonderful afternoon!!

  18. I love the dresses they wear in Mad Men! That’s a shame about the closing…

  19. Congrats! To bad about Preppy Potato, those belts are ADORABLE!!
p.s. I have something for you at my blog!!

Please remove the image of Saks from your website. Saks paid me for that photo shoot. You did not. Thank you.
