About Those True Prep Reviews, Savings of the Preppish Sort

Hello-Hello, and welcome to a Wednesday.

Today we have our promised follow-up to yesterday’s post.  That piece focused on our recent interview with True Prep author Lisa Birnbach, and we promised to look at reviews for the book. The Palm Beach Daily News speaks highly of the book:

“Like its predecessor, True Prep sardonically skewers the social customs of the blue blooded and Blue Booked — and, in keeping up with the times, is a far more egalitarian sort of social X-ray.

Preppiness is not for everyone, and that is the gift. It is a club that requires a certain comfort in its singularity — and that, book or no, is what continues to give Birnbach plenty to celebrate in her own effervescent way.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Crimson’s story is fairly negative:

“For the most part, the book—a series of short little features on subjects as diverse as trunk shows, second weddings, and different types of loafers—is an entertaining encapsulation of one of the most recognizable (and ridiculous) styles under the sun, and the author certainly maintains a healthy sense of humor throughout. But underneath the humor and behind the fun, the book has an odd dimension that suggests some things that are somewhat less whimsical.”

Birnbach Defines and Undermines the World of ‘True Prep’” was written by a junior at the Harvard daily paper, James K. McAuley; it is unlikely he is fond of “preppies” real, or literary:

“Naturally, there is never an explanation of why prep culture is something worth glorifying or even a subject worthy of two whole books.”

“It just so happens that almost anyone can assimilate into our world of prepdom,” Birnbach says with regard to the subject of preppy Muslims. But, after 234 pages, one has to wonder: why would anyone want to?”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Spencer Baily at the Book Beast is essentially positive in his look at the new book.

“Birnbach and Kidd’s book proves that there’s a lot about preppies that you probably never knew, nor did I, despite my own preppy background—boarding school, a good beat-up pair of Sperry top-siders, and, well, did you notice my name? To the contrary, I discovered a culture far more widespread—and diverse—than I ever imagined. In the 21st century, prepsterdom is pervasive.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many articles have used a question and answer format, including Allan Peppard’s story in the Dallas Morning News:

What has the digital age done to the foundation of preppydom?

Rocked it to its core. One thing that defines a preppy is our very primal need for privacy and the digital age has disemboweled that. Privacy is fundamental. Having money was never the goal of life. The goal of life was having fun, having friends and outsmarting the hangover.”

Mr. Peppard notes the challenges of following up on a classic:

“Duplicating a cultural phenomenon is Sisyphean work, but Birnbach is on her way back up the hill…”

Elizabeth Wellington’s story in the Philadelphia Inquirer offers a positive critique in addition to her interview with Ms. Birnbach:

“Certainly 30 years has not been enough time to break through the members-only barriers of some preppy pastimes (still sacred are private school, a second home on the beach, even the three-martini happy hour), but the door to prep fashion is now open to the masses. What once were elitist department store-only brands – Lacoste, Coach, and Lilly Pulitzer – now have their own mall stores (not to mention their own Facebook and Twitter pages). And anyone can masquerade as a preppy, thanks to H&M and Wal-Mart, the modern-day go-to stores for polo-style shirts and khakis.

So much for exclusivity.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A substantial amount of verbiage is devoted to the way the prep world has changed since TOPH (The Official Preppy Handbook) was published 30 years ago. (Eek!)  Ms. Wellington posed a number of questions to the author, including one on a topic covered in many interviews:
How has hip-hop influenced preppy, and how has preppy influenced hip-hop?
Hip-hop borrowed this aesthetic in a big way. They went big and bullish with preppy. It was preppy with a twist. . . What happened is it got to be too much. The logos were too big. Tommy Hilfiger had to ratchet it back a bit because he found it corrupted his mission.”
The hip-hop topic also comes up in the Dartmouth Independent story:
There is a classic prep style associated with Dartmouth and other Ivy League colleges. I’ve noticed, however, that the hipster look has been trickling in lately. Some have joked that hipsters, rather than being true counter-culturalists, are actually ironic preps.
It’s funny―I’ve never heard him say it, but I have a son who I think is a hipster, or at least he thinks he’s a hipster.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True Prep is dutiful where The Official Preppy Handbook was cheeky and seems more interested in promoting the virtues of prep-dom than taking a satirical look at its foibles.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A Continuous Lean

The über-cool Michael Williams at A Continuous Lean was pleasantly surprised by the book:

“When I first learned of the new book I instinctively cringed. Not to be pessimistic, but I just couldn’t see how anything could be as good as the original.
.
Though there are a few style related things in the book that I cannot endorse (which will go unnamed here), I have to say that after reading it with the mindset that the book is not meant to be a “part II,” (it is designed to complement the original) I really liked it. I also must admit that I was wrong about Lisa and True Prep. It is a worthy read and money well spent.
Clearly it is a mixed bag among the professional writers, just as it is with the preppy blog world.

Brooks Brothers Home Collection Launches

Hello-Hello, welcome to an almost-weekend, a delight to contemplate despite an overbooked schedule. Already.

We have a look at the Brooks Brothers Home Collection, debuting online today.

You won’t see much of the new line at your local B2, the majority of it is only available online.  New items include bed linens in two motifs; below, the Blue Yarn-Dye group.

The Glen Plaid and Pinstripe pieces are done in a 300 thread count cotton; we like this look.

The white Herringbone bedding is also made with 300-count cotton.

The Pillows may well be our favorite thing, inspired by the retailer’s neckties, they are made of a fine English silk twill.

They come in three sizes, 16″, 18″ and 20″.

In three patterns, the Jockey Stripe (L), Diagonal BB #1 Repp Stripe (M), and the Horizontal Guard Stripe (R), all available in the three colors shown.

A grouping of these will look elegant in many settings, it is good to see the pillows are Made in the USA.

Prices for the pillows run $248 – $288.

Of course, we’re rather partial to our Old School Toss pillows, they are crafted of 100% cotton, better suited to the beating they take bustling environment here at the Prepatorium.

(These don’t require quite the same investment as the silk pillows at Brooks.)

The Terry Bath Collection offers towels in a nice range of colors.

As well as a bathrobe and slippers.

This a big weekend for our friend Queen Bee Swain and rowers, it is Head of the Charles weekend in Boston. This year Brooks Brothers is one of the premier sponsors of the Regatta.

Good luck to the Bee!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our other tidbits today are brief, the first involving J. Crew. Yesterday the company’s stock was absolutely slammed following an analyst’s downgrade. From a Business Week story:

“The shares have fallen 26 percent this year.

The retailer now has a sale on its website with some items, such as a pink dress, discounted more than 70 percent.”

Clearly analysts are concerned about the ongoing need for sales and other promotional pricing. We checked and the weekly 3-day Factory Outlet sale continues this weekend; Crew’s Fall Sale is also underway. We don’t know about the “pink dress” referenced above, but definitely noticed some deep discounting.

The Wool Dunaway Dressy on the left is $69.99, originally it sold at $158. On the right we show the Glen Plaid Peacoat, originally $278 and now just $99.99, this is *before* the additional 20% off outerwear promotion that is currently being offered.

That kind of pricing can impact the profit picture in a significant way.

The other Item of note is also related to the market, yesterday Vera Bradley became a publicly traded company, now you can own a piece of the handbag and accessories maker if so inclined.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close on a Pretty in Pink and Green note (with apologies to our FB fans who may have already seen the picture), these are just some of the totes and lunch bags we have been getting in for the holidays!

With that we say adieu until next time, we hope each and every treasured reader enjoys a simply splendid weekend!

Talbots New Face, & Is It Joint Custody for a Gossip Guy?

Hello-Hello, welcome to another delightful day at the Prepatorium, where the sun is shining brightly and the grounds are drying out after this weekend’s torrential downpours.

There is so much happening we offer numerous Bits & Bytes we hope you find to be moderately interesting, beginning with news that Talbots has upped the ante when it comes to their marketing plans, hiring 90′s supermodel Linda Evangelista.

Amy Sussman/Getty

Above we show Ms. Evangelista in December of last year. Here’s more from the Page Six story:

“Talbots chief marketing officer Lori Wagner said of Evangelista “She possesses this timeless yet spontaneous glamour that’s irresistible in our minds.”

In a StyleList story Ms. Wagner refers to the model as “perfection,” adding:

“”For our 40-to-45-year-old customer, when you say Linda Evangelista, there’s a reaction.”

Look for promotional and marketing materials featuring Ms. Evangelista sometime in August, as well as in the oversized September issues of fashion magazines.  (With apologies to our Facebook Fans who may have already seen our mention of this.)

In Gossip Girl news, something many readers are likely to have already seen, the Chace Crawford mug shot.

Mr. Crawford was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in his hometown of Plano, Texas.  The incident took place in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Rafa Nadal won his fifth French Open yesterday, retaining his “King of Clay” honor.

Mr. Nadal is seen above being congratulated by ball boys and girls after his big win at Roland Garros.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Last night’s MTV Movie Awards offered many interesting style choices, as always. Perhaps one of the funniest moments involved Tom Cruise performing with Jennifer Lopez.

Mario Anzuoni/Reuters

That really is Tom Cruise; he was reprising his own Len Grossman character from “Tropic Thunder“.

Matt Sayles/AP

Twilight was a big winner; above we see Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner on stage at the Awards. (Nay-nay, TP was not caught watching MTV, we merely trawled this morning’s newsfeeds seeking tidbits for our cherished readers.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other style news, Details magazine offers a look at “Three Quintessentially American Fashion Archetypes“. Can you guess the first style under discussion?

Of course, it is ‘prep’.

Happy reading.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One other literary tidbit of note, not at all newsy to many fashion followers, and something heavily covered by most of the prep or trad men’s blogs, but not a topic we have chatted about here at the Princess:

Powerhouse Books via Amazon

Take Ivy” is a cult classic, on a par with The Original Preppy Handbook for many trads.

Courtesy Powerhouse Books

The 1965 book hails from Japan, and is essentially a collection of candid photographs shot on Ivy League campuses.  As described on Amazon’s site:

“Madras plaid, Top-Siders, seersucker shorts, highwater trousers, tweed jackets, Brooks Brothers, J. Press, J. Crew. What comes to mind?”

The news part of our conversation is the upcoming English-language version of the book, due out this fall, a much-lauded event for those fond of classic/traditional styles.  J. Crew fans may be pleased to know there will also be a limited edition version of Take Ivy, slated for sale at the company’s Liquor Store location.  The upcoming release may be pre-ordered from the publisher, Powerhouse Books.

For more on Trad style vs. WASP style (aka ‘preppy’), Esquire’s March issue offered some distinguishing characteristics. Or pop over to Ivy Style for an easier read.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have two more quick Sales & Savings mentions:

J. Crew is promoting an additional 20% off sale merchandise online only; use promo code EXTRA20 to receive the savings. The offer is scheduled to end June 9.

Lord & Taylor’s Friends and Family sale is underway, offering an extra 25% off ‘almost everything,’ with a 10% discount on cosmetics.

Use FRIENDS as the discount code; if shopping person at L&T head over to the site and print out one of those ubiquitous coupons.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with a question Tilly asked us to pass along. It seems she’s feeling a trifle insecure, for upon hearing us chat about this weeks Monday Tilly Pic, she asked “Does this picture make me look fat?”

Silly Tilly Hard at Work

So we replied, “Well dear, define that. As in, does a beached baby seal look fat?” She wept Tilly tears and we agreed to go with this angle instead.

Tilly's Better Side

Indeed.

(For those not fond of Twitter, the Monday Tilly Pics are merely a little feature where she tries to show her best side every week and we post the image on Twitpic.)

Target’s Next Designers, Tiffany’s Mint Julep & Preppy Sales

Hello-Hello and Happy April 15th!  Quite.

There is simply too much going on here at Princess Intergalactic HQ for a proper post, so we shall share a few bits and bytes we hope hold some appeal for our treasured readers.

First, news of Target’s next design partnerships; Gaby Basora will be doing a group for the retailer’s GO International collection.  Ms. Basora is best known for her Tucker collection, a brand previously mentioned in this space.  Below we show the Pink Wavy Princess Dress (L) and Tulip Bottom Skirt with shirred waist (R), both from the Tucker line.

Ms. Basora’s collection will be available beginning September 10.

WWD also has word on the next jewelry partnership at Targét, it is with Temple St. Clair.  Below, two examples of Ms. St. Clair’s current work (not the Target collection).

This collection launches at most Target stores and online August 29.  We are excited to see both groups.

Speaking of jewels, we must congratulate our friend Miss Wendy, her earrings will soon be seen in the upcoming Sex and the City 2 movie!

Here is a better look:

Congratulations to Miss Wendy! The film premieres May 27.

In other fashion collaboration news, WWD reports that J. Crew is doing a denim line for men:

“The retailer has collaborated with Japanese selvedge denim label Warehouse on an exclusive men’s style that will sell for $300 on its Web site, and at its Men’s Shop and Liquor Store locations….”

Crew is also continuing its recently introduced partnership with Levi’s.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So much for that hypothetical end to conspicuous consumption, behold the “world’s most expensive Mint Julep”:

Tiffany has partnered with Woodford (the bourbon folks) to create a mere 73 cups like the one seen above. Jared Paul Stern at Luxist has more:

“Only 73 of the sterling silver cups will be available at $1,000 apiece; purchasers will be served a julep in the cup at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, May 1st. Proceeds from the cups will benefit The Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes & Obesity Center.”

If interested in your own Julep, just click here for more information.

The Pink and Green Petal knobs are available at the always-fabulous Layla Grace.

In our post yesterday we nattered on about wedding gowns and Bridal Fashion Week. We close today with images from another fashion show held this week:

Afton Almaraz/AP

Above we see Schultzy, a West Highland terrier, modeling his bridal best during the “Last Bark for Bryant Park” fashion show.  This was the second year for the show, put on by FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) students, consisting only of garments fashioned for the four-legged family member.

We’re thinking we may need to share more from this show in tomorrow’s post….oui?

Until then, may everyone’s day be pink, green and beautiful!

Selena Gomez/KMart & Nastia Liukin/Penney’s (+ a few Preppy Sales & Savings)

Hello-Hello, and welcome to an absolutely frenzied day!

We are so incredibly behind schedule today our post is almost all photos, we begin with an early look at the Selena Gomez for Kmart Dream Out Loud collection.

When we initially posted about the line it had not yet landed with a retailer; the deal with Kmart was finalized two weeks ago.

According to today’s story in WWD, Kmart is using the line to help revitalize its Juniors department.

“First Kohl’s and Avril Lavigne, then Wal-Mart and Miley Cyrus, and recently J.C. Penney with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Now, it’s Kmart’s turn to rejuvenate its juniors department with Selena Gomez.”

The most expensive item in the collection is priced at $24.

The collection is scheduled for a launch coinciding with back-to-school shopping.

The Dallas Morning News has more on the new line for JC Penney:

“Designed for girls 8 to 12 years old, the collection will be promotionally priced from $11.99 to $21.99 and will be in stores just in time for the back-to-school season…”

Here are a few styles.

And a couple more styles from the upcoming line.

The pieces will be available in sizes 4 to-6x, 7 to 16 and plus.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We do have a few Sales & Savings should you be seeking fiscally friendly retail opportunities, beginning with Kate Spade, offering an additional 25% off sale merchandise.

Kate Spade

The Kate Spade offer ends April 4.

J. Crew is doing an additional 30% off sale merchandise, albeit with a twist we haven’t noticed before.

J.Crew

The interesting thing about this one is what’s in the fine print: “Offer not valid on phone orders.” Perhaps this has been the case forever, we just never noticed.  At any rate, to receive the discount use promo code EXTRA30 at checkout, this promotion ends April 1.

And thus ends our ever-so-short post!
