Hello-Hello, happy almost-weekend. Today we thought a good dose of Friday Fun was in order.

We begin with a look at some of the remarkable costumes in the upcoming Great Gatsby film. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire plays narrator Nick Carraway. The project remains on track for a Christmas release.

It turns out the men are wearing costumes by Brooks Brothers. In fact, Brooks has made more than 500 ensembles for the movie, working with Academy Award-winning designer Catherine Martin, she made ample use of the company’s archives in creating the designs.

Women’s Wear Daily points out the company has made “…some 1,700 pieces, including neckwear, accessories and shoes — for the cast and extras.” In addition to Brooks storied reputation as America’s oldest retailer, there’s another reason the firm was such a good fit for the costumes, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a customer. Back to the WWD story, quoting Catherine Martin:
“Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.
“It was this most basic and fundamental connection that has made our collaboration so authentic,” she said.”

According to the WWD article Ms. Martin noted that Brooks “has also defined the collegiate style — the preppy look — which was so close to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Princeton heart.”

The designer continued:
The same look was described in ‘The Great Gatsby’ by narrator Nick Carraway as his look of choice the first time he visits Gatsby’s mansion for one of his neighbor’s extraordinary parties: ‘Dressed up in white flannels I went over to his lawn a little after seven, and wandered around rather ill at-ease among swirls and eddies of people I didn’t know — though here and there was a face I had noticed on the commuting train.’

“Swirls and eddies of people I didn’t know…” is just one line demonstrating why so many of us love this book. Bliss on paper.
We still don’t know who has done the ladies costumes, including those for Carey Mulligan, the actress plays Daisy Buchanan.

But we do know that Tiffany did jewelry, pieces for the interior sets, along with other items like china and sterling flatware.

Ms. Martin’s decision to use Tiffany echoes her sentiments in going with Brooks Brothers:
“… (Martin) was drawn to the jeweler because F. Scott Fitzgerald himself was a Tiffany & Co. customer and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the brand’s first design director, ran with the Long Island social circles portrayed in the story.
Costumes for the 1974 movie starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow were done by Ralph Lauren.
